Yamanaka Onsen Kagari Kisshotei

A big, cheerful 48-room inn stepped down the Kakusenkei gorge, where dinner comes with free-flowing drinks, all-you-can-eat tempura or pork shabu-shabu, and free coffee, pudding and taiko drumming — but most rooms are dated, only three have their own spring-fed bath, and the baths never swap
Kagari Kisshotei opened in 2009 and belongs to the same group as its larger sister inn, Kissho Yamanaka, a short shuttle ride away. It is a 48-room house built down the side of the Kakusenkei gorge next to Korogi Bridge: you enter at the top floor and the rooms drop towards the river, and every room faces the water. The draw is value and generosity rather than polish. Two-meal stays start around ¥22,000 per person, and that buys free drinks including local sake at dinner, unlimited freshly fried tempura in one restaurant or Noto-pork shabu-shabu in the other, 24-hour lobby coffee, an after-bath beer, an evening pudding and weekend Kaga taiko drumming. Japanese guests rate it 4.63 across 1,926 reviews on one major site and 4.5 across 1,493 on another (dinner and breakfast both 4.6), and bloggers who stayed in 2022, 2023 and 2025 praised the tiered breakfast boxes, the tempura and the river-view outdoor baths — the women's side has a rare one-metre-deep standing bath. Know before you book: this is a busy, family-friendly inn, not a quiet hideaway. Only the three top rooms have a free-flowing spring bath and three more an onsen-fed tub; the private baths cost ¥3,000 for 45 minutes. In 2026 reviews, guests mention old buildings, worn unit baths, thin walls, a small men's outdoor bath, hair left in a room, parking 'a little way off' and one curt server — though most of 2026's reviews still give four or five stars.
Room Selection Guide
What the guests who stayed here actually recommendRecommended
Hoshi (星) special Japanese-Western rooms (42㎡, three rooms)
The cheapest way to get onsen water in your room: a tatami room, a bedroom with Simmons beds and a stone tub whose tap runs spring water (45.2°C, so add cold water). Bloggers stayed here in 2022 and in March 2025 (after a free upgrade from a Kaze room), and liked the river view and L'Occitane toiletries; the 2025 couple found the décor 'classic old ryokan' rather than exciting. From about ¥29,500 per person.
Mochizuki (望月), Jōgen (上弦) and Shingetsu (新月), the view-bath rooms
One room each, 62–79㎡ on upper floors, each with its own free-flowing onsen bath facing the gorge, plus a free minibar, private transfer from Kaga Onsen Station or Komatsu Airport (book three days ahead), a choice of premium breakfasts and, for two of them, a massage chair. From about ¥37,000–39,000 per person; with only three such rooms, book early.
Request To Avoid
Hana (花) standard Japanese rooms (23 rooms) and anything booked 'room type unspecified'
The cheapest rooms (from about ¥22,000 per person) have a unit bath on lower floors and a separate bath and toilet on upper floors. In 2026, guests described worn hallway carpet and a small, shabby unit bath (September), a cramped room and toilet in an 'unspecified' booking (May), neighbours' voices through the walls (August), and a bathroom by the entrance that means putting shoes on to reach it (April). Akatsuki rooms have only a shower booth.

Dining Deep Dive
Breakfast Consensus
4.5/5A three-tier lacquered box of Kaga dishes (sashimi, simmered dishes, grilled fish), rice served in a tub and a self-serve corner with salad, natto, juices and even local sake, from 7:30 in the Irodori restaurant — consistently praised by bloggers in 2023 and 2025 and rated 4.6–4.64 on two sites, though a September 2026 reviewer wanted more variety
Reserve the private bath at the front desk as soon as you arrive — it's first come, first served. Book the free shuttle by the day before (Komatsu Airport: three days before). The free car park is a short walk away; pull up at the entrance and staff will move the car. Taiko drumming in the sixth-floor lobby is Fridays to Sundays at 20:45, and pudding is served 20:00–22:00.
Dinner Insights
4.4/5Always in a restaurant, never in-room, at 17:30 or 19:30 (19:45 in winter), with free beer, wine, spirits and local Shishi no Sato sake. Irodori (5F) adds unlimited tempura fried at an open kitchen; Kaga Tobi (6F) adds unlimited Noto-pork shabu-shabu. Autumn and winter menus feature salt-grilled nodoguro, and crab plans run from October (snow crab) and November (tagged Kanō crab). Bloggers in 2022 and 2025 loved the tempura, a wild ayu and nodoguro-and-Noto-beef courses; criticisms include worn tableware, a 'so-so' soup, heavy desserts, limited sake variety and staff whose explanations were hard to follow (July 2026).
Onsen & Wellness Realities
Yamanaka Onsen's blended town supply (sources 3, 7, 8, 10 and 11), a weakly alkaline simple spring. The three view-bath rooms are described as free-flowing; the inn does not say whether the shared baths are free-flowing or recirculated.
Two shared baths on the ground floor by the river, open 14:00–10:00 (closed 2:00–2:45), and they never swap: women get Shiratori no Yu, with a one-metre-deep standing outdoor bath, a Shigaraki-ware tub and an indoor bath; men get Hyakken no Yu, a rock outdoor bath closer to the water. Guests love the gorge views, but several 2026 reviewers found the men's outdoor bath small ('three people at most') and a blogger who visited at night in 2022 found trees blocked the river view. Two private baths (hinoki Koharu and rock Aki no Bō) cost ¥3,000 for 45 minutes, free for Akatsuki and Niji rooms and on consecutive nights. A monitor by the lobby lift shows how crowded the baths are.

Local Warnings & Nuances
- 01
Check-in 14:00 (no early check-in), check-out 10:00; late check-out on request. Cancellation: 30% from 3 days before, 50% the day before, 100% on the day (20% from 10 days before at Golden Week, Obon and New Year).
- 02
Not barrier-free: the inn says so itself, and a guest in October 2026 noted several short flights of steps on the way to the baths.
- 03
Very family-oriented: pre-schoolers pay ¥7,150 with children's meals, under-3s stay free, and in summer and Golden Week there's a kids' festival stall corner — expect lively restaurants and lobby.
- 04
Most 2026 reviews praise the staff's warmth, but some guests found dish explanations hard to follow. One February 2026 family reported a curt server.
- 05
The free car park (42 spaces) is a short walk from the entrance, and arrivals can bunch up at the front door; no pets, and all rooms are non-smoking.
