Japanese Guest Consensus

Eighteen detached cottages in the woods outside Yufuin, each with its own free-flowing onsen bath, reached by a suspension bridge from a 300-year-old farmhouse — the food wins praise, but the main-wing rooms are dated, the room baths are small and enclosed, and the paths are hard going

Gettoan sits in the hills outside Yufuin's town centre: you check in at a 300-year-old farmhouse moved here from Yamanashi, then cross a suspension bridge over a stream to 18 detached cottages spread over about 10,000 tsubo (roughly 33,000㎡). Twelve standard cottages form the main wing; the six cottages of the annex copy famous Kyoto tea houses such as Shōkintei and Kohōan. Every cottage has an open-air bath fed by the inn's own simple spring (62°C), which the inn describes as free-flowing, with water added only to cool it. Japanese guests rate it 4.6 across 350 reviews on one major site (5.0 for both breakfast and dinner) and 4.00 across 169 on another, but only 3.52 across 10 on a third. Bloggers in 2022 and 2026 and recent reviewers praise the quiet, the bridge, the empty shared baths, kaiseki served one dish at a time and free matcha ice cream and kabosu sherbet around the clock. What to know before you book: a spring 2026 blogger found the main-wing room dated, the room bath cramped, with only an outdoor shower and a washbasin right beside the sitting room, and caught three stink bugs that night. Other complaints from 2024–2026: no indoor bath, small enclosed room baths, a broken light, a waiter's sharp manner, little to drink beyond a few free cans, and steep paths that a September 2026 guest called impossible for anyone who struggles to walk. Two-meal stays start at about ¥85,400 for two.

Room Selection Guide

Recommended

  • Annex tea-house cottages — Shōkintei (松琴亭), Kohōan (孤篷庵), Shōiken (笑意軒) and others

Six cottages modelled on Kyoto tea rooms, with their own open-air baths and free use of an annex-only private open-air bath beside the Shirataki River (14:00–11:00). The inn calls Shōkintei (6 + 11 tatami, sleeps 2) its flagship, with a terrace over the river; it can only be requested by phone. A May 2026 couple marking an anniversary in Kohōan rated everything 5/5, and a December 2024 reviewer found both free private baths framed by autumn leaves. Annex guests dine in private rooms at Keisuikyo. A January 2026 couple found the annex bath and washbasin area unheated and cold, and a November 2025 couple in their 60s–70s found the walk to dinner long and steep.

  • Fumizuki, Hazuki and Nagatsuki (文月・葉月・長月) in the main wing

The largest standard cottages (10 + 8 tatami, sleeping up to 5) and the only ones the inn lists with a view of Mount Yufu — the best main-wing choice for families or groups. Children can stay in the main wing but not in the annex.

Request To Avoid

  • Standard main-wing cottages (8 + 6 tatami, including the bed-type rooms)

The cheapest rooms are where most complaints come from. A spring 2026 blogger was startled by a dated room, a cramped open-air bath with the shower outside and a washbasin beside the sitting room, then three stink bugs that night; an April 2024 reviewer compared it to staying at a grandmother's country house, with no indoor bath, a broken bedroom light and few power sockets. A September 2025 reviewer found the room bath so enclosed there was barely any view. The inn has said it plans renovation, and the main wing was closed for repairs in July 2026.

Dining Deep Dive

Breakfast Consensus

4.2/5

A Japanese breakfast in your private dining room, with local produce — rated 5.0 on one major site, though a spring 2026 blogger found it on the small side

There is no convenience store within walking distance, and a September 2025 reviewer found only four cans of beer in the room fridge, with no alcohol for sale or to order, so bring your own drinks (outside drinks are allowed) — although the inn's February 2026 news now promotes cocktails from its bartender, so ask. The free fridge drinks varied from about eight in April 2024 to just two bottles of water in February 2025. One February 2025 reviewer noted no meals on Wednesdays. The station shuttle is suspended, so a hire car from Oita Airport is the easiest way to arrive.

Dinner Insights

4.4/5

A monthly-changing kaiseki the inn calls 'creative country cooking', served one dish at a time in private dining rooms — Gettoan or Hoshiakari for main-wing guests, Keisuikyo by the river for the annex. A 2022 blogger loved the local produce at dinner and breakfast; a 2025 press-tour writer singled out Bungo beef sukiyaki and huge local shiitake, and the house sake is made by Oita's Kuge Honten. Extras include seasonal Seki-aji sashimi (¥11,000 for 2–3) and Bungo beef fillet (¥6,600 for 150g). Critics found portions small for younger diners, the 'semi-private' room let them hear other tables (2026), and one May 2025 family found a waiter curt with them and their toddler.

Onsen & Wellness Realities

Water Type

The inn's own Gettoan spring, a weakly alkaline simple spring at 62°C at source and about 42°C in the bath. The official site says it is free-flowing, with water added to bring the temperature down.

Privacy & Atmosphere

Every cottage has its own open-air onsen bath; reviewers often find them small and some are enclosed, with no indoor bath and an outdoor shower in the standard rooms. Separate men's and women's shared baths (indoor and open-air, facing Mount Yufu, 12:00–9:00) swap overnight and were often empty for bloggers in 2022 and 2026, though a March 2026 guest found the washing area and changing room messy. Annex guests also get a free private open-air bath by the Shirataki River, closed for repairs 19–31 August 2026. Cameras are not allowed in the shared baths.

Tattoo Policy

No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. Every cottage has its own open-air bath.

Local Warnings & Nuances

  1. 01

    Check-in 15:00 (last check-in 18:00 with dinner, 19:30 room-only), check-out 11:00. Tell the inn if you will arrive after 18:00.

  2. 02

The cottages are spread across a hillside reached by a suspension bridge, paths and steps — a September 2026 reviewer said the walk to dinner is impossible for anyone who struggles to walk, and the cottages are some way from the dining rooms.

  3. 03

Cancellation: 30% from 14 days before, 50% from 7 days, 70% the day before, 100% on the day or for a no-show. Bath tax ¥150 per person.

  4. 04

Children are welcome in the main wing (infants 0–5 can share bedding), but the annex is for adults: the official site keeps under-junior-high children out of its private bath, and one booking site says junior-high age and under can't stay there.

  5. 05

It's a mountain inn: stink bugs, frogs, ants and other insects come up in reviews from spring to autumn, and the inn itself says it has more insects than town-centre inns.
