A 1988 inn rebuilt in concrete after the 2016 earthquake: 13 modern suites in a wooded garden, each with its own free-flowing onsen bath on heated stone floors, and noon check-out — Japanese guests rate it near-perfect, but most baths are indoor tubs with opening windows, not true open-air baths
Sanso Warabino opened in 1988 as an inn of Japanese-style cottages on a 3,500-tsubo wooded plot in Kawakita, away from Yufuin's crowded Yunotsubo street. The 2016 Kumamoto earthquake damaged it badly; it closed and was rebuilt from scratch in earthquake-resistant concrete, reopening in 2019 with the concept 'an inn that wears the Yufuin landscape'. Today there are 13 suites from 57㎡ to 132㎡, floored with heated Hita stone, hung with contemporary art, and each with a bath of 100% free-flowing alkaline spring water from the inn's own source — there are no shared baths. Japanese guests rate it 4.86 across 207 reviews on one major site (rooms and service both 4.91, baths 4.83), and 95 points across 21 ratings on another, with dinner and breakfast at 97. Bloggers who stayed between 2022 and 2026 — several of them repeat guests — praise the silence and birdsong, floor heating that makes air conditioning unnecessary in winter, the free minibar and canelé welcome sweet, the 12:00 check-out, and creative kaiseki built around Oita wagyu, local fish and rice grown by the owners. The catches: the cheaper suites have an indoor tub whose large windows open onto the garden rather than a true open-air bath, and one 2022 blogger's window faced neighbouring houses. A May 2025 solo guest found a stale smell, a stark interior, a bath facing dead leaves and ordinary food; in 2026 others found the spring water slow to cool, dinner short on excitement, the bar's drinks underwhelming and a duvet too heavy, and insects come with the woods. Children under six can't enter the restaurant. Two-meal plans run about ¥58,500–81,000 per person for two sharing.
Room Selection Guide
What the guests who stayed here actually recommendRecommended
Maisonette suites (130–132㎡) — two Maisonette Stylish (Yuzuriha 𣜿 and Hiiragi 柊) and the single Maisonette Luxury
The only rooms with a true open-air bath: a second-floor tub and balcony facing Mt Yufu, on top of the ground-floor stone bath. The official site calls the Maisonette Luxury the inn's only fully freestanding cottage. A November 2024 couple in a Maisonette Stylish loved the autumn leaves from the room and hearing nothing but nature; a March 2026 family enjoyed the birdsong from the open-air bath but found the water too hot and slow to cool.
Luxury Suites (85㎡) — Kaede 楓, Enju 槐, Buna 橅, Nire 楡
A living room plus a separate bedroom and a large stone bath behind opening windows, sleeping up to four with extra beds. A June 2025 blogger in Enju, at the far end of the garden, found it quiet and spacious; a February 2026 family of three found it roomy with plenty of storage, though the bedroom is compact, there is only one washbasin and no dresser.
Request To Avoid
Stylish Suites (57㎡) — Sakura 櫻, Mayumi 檀, Kunugi 櫟, Kōzo 楮, Muku 椋, Ume 梅
The entry-level one-room suite, still spacious for two, with twin 120cm beds and an indoor stone bath you open to the garden — not a true open-air bath. A March 2026 solo blogger in Sakura noted the terrace view isn't open and the duvet was heavy; a 2022 blogger saw neighbouring houses beyond the bath window and kept the blind down; a May 2025 solo reviewer complained of a stale smell, a bare interior and a bath facing dead leaves.

Breakfast Consensus
4.5/5A served Japanese breakfast at any time between 8:00 and 10:00: a cup of dashi first, a big salad with house sesame dressing, onsen-steamed vegetables and sausage, grilled barracuda, rolled omelette, the inn's own rice with refills, then fruit, yogurt and coffee — consistently praised; one June 2026 guest wished the plastic miso bowl were wooden
Check-out is 12:00, so there's time for a last bath after breakfast (11:00 'early check-out' plans are 5% cheaper). Book the free pick-up from Yufuin Station; guests say the entrance is hard to find by car (15 free spaces, 3 minutes from the Yufuin interchange). On autumn and winter mornings, walk up to the high ground nearby for the valley's morning fog. The Dankōbai salon serves coffee 8:00–18:00 and drinks with jazz and a gramophone 20:00–23:00.
Dinner Insights
4.4/5Creative kaiseki at the Naka-yashiki restaurant at 18:00, 18:30 or 19:00, often in a private room, by chef Akira Hirose (trained in Ginza and at established ryokan): A4-grade Oita wagyu steak, sashimi from Saganoseki port, Yufuin eel, and the owners' home-grown rice served with ryūkyū (marinated local fish) and dashi for ochazuke; leftover rice comes back as onigiri. Bloggers in 2025 and 2026 found it fresh, refined and well judged in quantity. A March 2026 reviewer found it 'unmoving', and a 2025 critic called it ordinary.
Onsen & Wellness Realities
Alkaline simple spring from the inn's own source on the grounds, weakly alkaline and rich in metasilicic acid — the official site says every room's bath is 100% free-flowing (kakenagashi). Tubs are Hita natural stone. The water runs hot; guests cool it by adding tap water.
No shared baths: each of the 13 suites has its own onsen bath, usable at any time. The Stylish and Luxury suites have an indoor tub with large windows you open for a semi-open-air feel; only the three maisonettes add a second-floor open-air bath looking towards Mt Yufu. Guests describe bathing to birdsong, but one 2022 blogger noticed houses beyond the window, and a 2025 reviewer's bath looked onto dead leaves rather than the garden.
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. Every room has its own onsen bath and there are no shared baths.
