A big, polished riverside inn with fugu dinners and a famous breakfast bread — book a suite if you want real onsen, because the large baths are recirculated
Founded in 1881, Otani Sanso is now a 98-room resort-style ryokan on the Otozure river, with a pool garden, a club lounge, a bakery, live music in the lobby and its own observatory dome. Japanese guests rate it among the best large inns in Japan: 4.8 on Jalan across 2,093 reviews, 4.76 on Rakuten (1,477) and 4.87 on Ikyu (179), with service and cleanliness scoring highest. The water is the catch. The alkaline simple spring (pH 9.67) is recirculated and heated in the two large bath halls, and a December 2023 blogger noticed chlorine; only the 21 suites with open-air baths have free-flowing onsen, and a 2026 reviewer advises booking one of those if that matters to you. Dinner is a monthly seasonal kaiseki with fugu sashimi and karaage, wagyu shabu-shabu and abalone, at a venue the inn assigns; suites get a separate, course-by-course menu. The breakfast buffet's house-baked bread is the single most-praised thing in the blogs. Standard rooms are comfortable, but the cheapest twins face the car park, and a September 2026 guest who booked the river side faced the road. Plans start around ¥25,000–30,000 per adult with two meals; a premium river-view room cost about ¥45,100 per person in October 2025. Its sister inn, Bettei Otozure, is a separate, pricier ryokan.
Room Selection Guide
What the guests who stayed here actually recommendRecommended
Any suite with an open-air bath (21 rooms in 10 types, from the 45㎡ Akebono Superior Suite to the 120㎡ Otani Sanso Suite)
The only way to bathe in free-flowing onsen here: the official site lists each suite's bath as a free-flowing open-air onsen, and guests in 2026 saw the hot water overflowing. Suites also include the Club Lounge (16:00–18:00, free drinks) and a special course dinner in Zuiun or the private Akebono dining rooms. Jalan reviewers paid over ¥30,000 per adult for these plans in 2025–2026.
Akebono Premium (44㎡, river side, 20 rooms)
The bloggers' favourite standard room: river and forest views, free drinks in the fridge and children's yukata (March 2026), and a bed-room upgrade for ¥2,500 that one April 2026 guest found huge. It has an in-room bath, but only the suites' open-air baths are listed as free-flowing onsen. A family paid about ¥45,100 per person with two meals in October 2025.
Request To Avoid
Twin (mountain side, 38㎡), Fuyō Premium and Single
These have a shower only, no bath. A December 2023 blogger's cheapest twin looked onto the car park, a May 2026 guest found the Fuyō Premium room and view worse than the Deluxe Twin they had the year before, and children can't be booked into twin rooms. Also note that a September 2026 guest who booked a river-side room ended up facing the road.

Dining Deep Dive
Breakfast Consensus
4.6/5A buffet of more than 50 items at the Fūkō restaurant (7:00–9:30), with an omelette station and mini breads from the inn's own bakery — the bread is what bloggers rave about
Suite plans may come with a private Japanese breakfast instead; an April 2025 suite guest missed the buffet's bread and omelettes, and the inn replied you can ask for the buffet when booking. A May 2026 reviewer complained that bread and salad weren't refilled.
Dinner Insights
4.4/5Standard plans get the monthly seasonal kaiseki in one of three venues (Fūkō, the Zuiun main dining room or the Hagi Japanese restaurant), assigned by the inn; some plans guarantee a private room or Zuiun. Guests in 2023–2026 describe fugu sashimi, fugu karaage, wagyu shabu-shabu and abalone; one December 2023 blogger found the fugu sashimi clearly weaker than at a specialist restaurant but the karaage excellent. Teppanyaki and yakitori courses cost extra, tiger-fugu plans run October to March, and in summer 2026 there was a holiday-only dinner buffet. A children's meal cost about ¥4,000 in March 2026; bringing your own champagne cost ¥3,000 corkage.
Onsen & Wellness Realities
Yumoto Onsen, an alkaline simple spring (pH 9.67, 675 L/min). The large baths are heated and recirculated — Ikyu marks them as not free-flowing, a 2026 guest confirmed recirculation and filtration, and a December 2023 blogger smelled chlorine. The open-air baths in the 21 suites are free-flowing.
Two bath halls that swap between men and women: Seseragi-no-yu on the first floor (indoor bath, sleeping bath, jacuzzi, sauna with cold bath, cypress and rock open-air baths) and Komorebi-no-yu on the second (indoor, semi-open-air, herb bath and sauna). Open to guests 12:00–23:30 and 6:00–10:00, so you can bathe before the 15:00 check-in. There are no private reservable baths. Guests disagree on which side is better; a 2026 blogger found the men's side much nicer than the women's. The guest Grande Spa in the sister inn Bettei Otozure is also open to Otani Sanso guests (14:00–22:00).

Local Warnings & Nuances
- 01
Check-in 15:00 (last 19:30), check-out 11:00 since October 2023; the cheaper Short Stay plan is 16:30 in and 9:30 out. Bathing tax ¥300 per adult per night.
- 02
Tell the inn your arrival time for the free station shuttle; a May 2026 guest phoned from the bus stop and was picked up straight away. A shared jumbo taxi from Shin-Yamaguchi costs ¥3,000 and runs four times a day.
- 03
It is big and busy: an August 2024 guest found the common areas a little dated, and a May 2026 reviewer reported unrefilled breakfast dishes and staff entering the bath before closing time.
- 04
In suites, the step into the open-air bath is high; a June 2026 guest with elderly parents learned only afterwards that a step stool was available on request.
- 05
Children are welcome except in twin rooms. Bed guards, kids' chairs and picture books are available, and the summer pool (mid-July to end of August in 2026) is free for guests.
