Japanese Guest Consensus

A polished 49-room inn where every room is 74㎡ and looks down on the Kinugawa gorge, with kaiseki served in your room or a private dining room and standout service — but the baths are shared and recirculated, every room is a smoking room, and the 1991 building shows its age

Kinugawa Onsen, the inn reminds guests, was found in the Edo period and was once reserved for daimyō and monks returning from Nikkō's shrines. Sanraku is a 49-room house built in 1991 high above the river in the middle of the town, now part of Ken Hotels & Resorts' small Sanraku brand alongside Nasu Onsen Sanraku. It's showy in an Edo-revival way: incense in the entrance, matcha and dry sweets at check-in, a phoenix painting the inn says came from Nikkō Tōshōgū. The draw is space and service: every room is 74㎡ — three tatami rooms or a Japanese-Western layout — with the gorge below, and dinner and breakfast are always in your room or a private or semi-private room, never a buffet. Japanese guests rate it 4.3 across 707 reviews on one major site (service 4.6, bath 4.1) and 4.23 across 670 on another (dinner 4.44). Travelogues from December 2022, November 2023 and March 2024 praise the rooms, private dining and marbled Tochigi wagyu; reviewers in 2025–2026 add the quick station pick-up, the free after-bath beer and pickles, and luxury toiletries on the women's side. Know before you book: the baths are recirculated with water added, there are no private baths, and no non-smoking rooms. Complaints in 2026 included a musty room, tough wagyu, salty food, dinners that came slowly or didn't match the price, broken taps in the women's bath and, in May, another guest already inside the room at check-in. Two-meal stays ran about ¥27,000–44,000 per person in 2026.

Room Selection Guide

Recommended

  • Japanese rooms (74㎡: a 10-tatami main room plus two 6-tatami rooms), ideally on an upper floor

The standard room and the one most praised: families of three generations in 2026 could put children to sleep in a separate room, a solo guest who returned in April 2026 loved the space, and up to three people can have both meals served in the room. A 2025 guest in a 10th-floor corner room called the gorge view outstanding; fifth- and seventh-floor rooms still look down on the river. All rooms are smoking rooms — write '消臭希望' (deodorising requested) when booking.

  • Japanese-Western rooms (74㎡: semi-double twin beds plus an 8-tatami room)

For anyone who prefers beds: a December 2022 family of three had the twin beds plus futons laid out in the tatami room, and a March 2024 family looked out over the Fureai bridge and the river. Meals for these rooms are served in a private room or the Ogura restaurant, not in the room. Top-floor corner suites and two special rooms (a 'Taishō-romance' Royal Suite) are booked by phone.

Request To Avoid

  • Any room if you're sensitive to smoke or wear

There are no non-smoking rooms. A non-smoker in April 2026 noticed no smell, but a July 2026 guest smelled tobacco in the corridor and another found the room musty. The building dates from 1991: guests in 2026 called rooms old or 'retro', windows were dirty in December 2025, and the in-room bath is ordinary heated tap water, not onsen.

Breakfast Consensus

4.2/5

A Japanese set breakfast in the same room as dinner — rice from a rice specialist (Tochigi Koshihikari), egg-on-rice with orange-yolked Ranō eggs, and miso soup with yuba udon are the dishes guests remember. Most love it, though one July 2026 guest found the rice and soup lukewarm and the restaurant was cold one February 2026 morning

Phone from Kinugawa-Onsen Station and a car comes in a few minutes. Free drinks (beer, oolong tea or yuzu juice) with pickles are served at the after-bath lounge 16:00–18:00, and coffee in the lobby lounge after breakfast — one guest wished it ran in the afternoon too. Electric bikes are free to borrow. For birthdays the inn takes a souvenir photo and serves ice cream; cake or flowers need five days' notice. Parking is free: 15 spaces at the door and 80 in a second lot about 500 m away.

Dinner Insights

4.1/5

Creative kaiseki on a seasonal menu — Tochigi wagyu grilled on a ceramic plate is the fixture, with the top-grade 'Takumi' wagyu on the special menu, and seasonal ayu, matsutake or fugu. It's served in your room (Japanese rooms, up to three people), a private dining room or a partitioned booth at the Ogura restaurant. Travelogues found it refined and light (2023), the wagyu thick and marbled (2022) and everything delicious (2024); 2025–2026 reviewers praise the presentation and celebration touches. Critics: a 2023 repeat guest sensed cost-cutting, and in 2026 guests mentioned tough wagyu, a salty edge, small portions for big eaters, slow service and a forgotten sparkling-wine toast.

Onsen & Wellness Realities

Water Type

Kinugawa Onsen alkaline simple spring (the inn lists 44.0°C for the hinoki open-air bath and 36.6°C for the main bath). The inn's FAQ and booking-site data say the water is diluted, heated and recirculated with filtration — not free-flowing.

Privacy & Atmosphere

Separate men's and women's baths on the ground floor (they don't swap), each with stone-tiled indoor tubs, a sauna, a cold plunge and a covered hinoki open-air bath (the women's is semi-open); open 5:00–10:00 and 14:30–24:00. There are no private or family baths and no rooms with onsen baths. The women's side stocks brand shampoos and Chanel or Dior skincare with ReFa dryers; a 2025 guest wished the men's side matched. Guests found it crowded before dinner but quiet in the morning; complaints in 2026 included a lukewarm sauna, broken taps and water too hot for children.

Tattoo Policy

No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn.

Local Warnings & Nuances

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00 (last 18:00), check-out 10:30; late arrivals can start dinner no later than 20:00. Cancellation costs 30% from three days before, 50% the day before and 100% on the day.

  2. 02

All rooms allow smoking; there are no non-smoking rooms, only deodorising on request. Smoking is banned in the Ogura restaurant but allowed in private dining rooms.

  3. 03

There are no barrier-free rooms; tubs in the shared baths have handrails and two wheelchairs can be borrowed. A 2025 guest using a wheelchair said the staff were very helpful.

  4. 04

The official booking system changed on 27 August 2026: earlier official bookings stay valid, but to change one you must cancel and rebook. Bookings through other sites are changed through that site.

  5. 05

Children are welcome (children's meals; 2–5-year-olds sharing a bed pay ¥2,200). Beyond the baths, karaoke, a bar and massages there's little to do in the inn — guests in 2025 and January 2026 said a second night or the immediate area felt empty.
