Best ryokan in Kinugawa Onsen: 5 inns compared on onsen, food and price
Five Kinugawa Onsen ryokan compared: onsen baths in the room, private dining, history, families, value and what's really in the water — with the catch at each inn.
Updated Oct 31, 2026
Kinugawa Onsen, in Nikkō, Tochigi, is a hot-spring town strung along the Kinugawa gorge, about two hours by Tōbu limited express from Asakusa or Shinjuku. Our five reviewed inns sit at different points along the river: Kinugawa Onsen Hana no Yado Matsuya at the quiet northern end, a 3–5-minute walk from Kinugawa-Kōen Station; Kinugawa Onsen Sanraku on a bluff in the centre of town, a 10-minute walk from Kinugawa-Onsen Station, with a free pick-up if you phone from the station; Kinugawa Onsen Asaya Hotel and Kinugawa Onsen Isshinkan in Taki, about 10 and 8 minutes from Kinugawa-Onsen Station on the Dial Bus; and Kinugawa Onsen Hotel Manyotei at the southern end, about a 6-minute walk from Tōbu World Square Station. Four are classic-tier inns and Manyotei is our value pick; two-meal prices run from about ¥9,000 per person at Manyotei to about ¥44,000 at Sanraku.
The first thing to know in Kinugawa is the water: all five use alkaline or weakly alkaline simple springs, and all five heat and recirculate them in their shared baths — the one bath we found described as free-flowing is in a single room type at Asaya. Asaya and Isshinkan draw from springs of their own, and two inns, Manyotei and Matsuya, state that they add water. Only Asaya and Manyotei publish a tattoo policy — both turn tattoos away from the large baths unless a small one is fully covered by a sticker — so ask the others directly. Below, the five are sorted by what you're travelling for, each with its scores, prices and main catch, taken from our full report on each ryokan.
Best for a private onsen in your room
Kinugawa Onsen Asaya Hotel is the only one of the five with an onsen bath in every room, fed from the inn's own alkaline spring: the 57㎡ Hachibankan rooms come with an onsen bath and access to a sixth-floor premium lounge — an October 2024 blogger in room 702 found the room wide and heard the river below — and the 52㎡ Japanese-Western rooms on Shūhōkan's 10th–12th floors have a view bath facing the gorge. The inn marks most of these in-room baths as recirculated; the 12th-floor Grand Twin is the type it explicitly describes as free-flowing, and the single open-air-bath room type is on Hachibankan's second floor. A September 2026 reviewer praised the round-the-clock in-room onsen; the catch is that the small 20㎡ Western twins have no view, and valley-side rooms look out on derelict hotels. Asaya also has four bookable private baths (¥4,000 for 50 minutes), booked at check-in.
Kinugawa Onsen Hana no Yado Matsuya's Japanese rooms with an open-air bath and private garden overlook the river, each with an outdoor tub filled with hot-spring water — a 2026 guest found the round ceramic tub 'much bigger than it looks', though a winter guest found it cold and slow to warm up — from about ¥30,000 per person for two sharing on the official site; its cypress private bath costs ¥3,300 for 45 minutes. Kinugawa Onsen Isshinkan has no rooms with onsen baths, but its Yukemuri Room includes 50 minutes in the spring-fed riverside private open-air bath, which other guests book for ¥3,300 (the room's own view bath isn't onsen). Kinugawa Onsen Hotel Manyotei has a free indoor private bath (40 minutes), first come at the front desk after check-in, so it fills up. Kinugawa Onsen Sanraku has no private baths and no rooms with onsen baths: its in-room bath is ordinary heated tap water.

Best food
Kinugawa Onsen Sanraku is the pick for kaiseki served in private: dinner and breakfast always come in your room (Japanese rooms, up to three people), a private dining room or a partitioned booth at the Ogura restaurant, never a buffet, and dinner scores 4.44 on one major site, where the inn rates 4.23 across 670 reviews. Tochigi wagyu grilled on a ceramic plate is the fixture, with top-grade 'Takumi' wagyu on the special menu and seasonal ayu, matsutake or fugu; breakfast brings Tochigi Koshihikari, egg-on-rice with orange-yolked Ranō eggs and miso soup with yuba udon. Travelogues from 2022 to 2024 found it refined and the wagyu thick and marbled, but 2026 guests mentioned tough wagyu, a salty edge, small portions for big eaters and slow service.
Kinugawa Onsen Isshinkan also serves every meal in private or semi-private rooms, with a set menu chosen per person — the best-selling tomato-broth hotpot of Tochigi wagyu and yuba, a centenary two-broth hotpot, wagyu shabu-shabu or a new Nikkō yuba shōjin menu — and dinner rates 4.37 across 901 reviews on one major site; critics found only one or two slices of meat in the shabu-shabu and cold grilled fish at breakfast. Kinugawa Onsen Hana no Yado Matsuya plates its kaiseki course by course, often in a fully private room, with Tochigi pork or beef sukiyaki and rice cooked in a pot at the table — the star for many 2026 reviewers — though others found portions small and dishes laid out cold. Kinugawa Onsen Asaya Hotel is the buffet choice: about 100 dishes over 90 minutes, with steaks, crab and all-you-can-eat Häagen-Dazs, but long queues at peak times and dry steak for some 2026 critics; course plans move you to semi-private or private rooms. Kinugawa Onsen Hotel Manyotei's soy-milk pork hotpot with a half-buffet, red snow crab on most plans and 90 minutes of drinks is fair for the price, most agree — not a kaiseki dinner.

Best for history and character
Kinugawa Onsen Asaya Hotel has the longest history of the five: founded in 1888, it is now one of the town's largest inns, with 192 rooms in two wings, a soaring lobby atrium with glass lifts and a pipe organ, and a 13th-floor open-air bath about 80 m above the river; the inn describes its Hachibankan wing as a re-creation of an old-style Japanese onsen inn. Kinugawa Onsen Isshinkan opened in 1922 as a kappō restaurant; the inn tells how, some 20 years later, the owner Numao Hironosuke found one snow-free patch on the riverbank, warm to the touch, and the restaurant became an inn with its own hot spring.
Kinugawa Onsen Hana no Yado Matsuya has been run by the same company since 1957, and its hallways are filled with Takehisa Yumeji prints and antique dolls — charming to some guests, 'a little creepy' at night to others. Kinugawa Onsen Sanraku is younger — built in 1991 — but showy in an Edo-revival way, with incense in the entrance, matcha and dry sweets at check-in and a phoenix painting the inn says came from Nikkō Tōshōgū; the inn reminds guests that Kinugawa Onsen was found in the Edo period and was once reserved for daimyō and monks returning from Nikkō's shrines. Kinugawa Onsen Hotel Manyotei is an older 72-room onsen hotel revived by the budget BBH Hotel Group — in substance a big, casual onsen inn rather than a traditional ryokan.

Best for families and easy access
Kinugawa Onsen Asaya Hotel is the family inn: a kids' room, baby gear to borrow, karaoke and a game corner, with primary-school pupils at 70% and ages 3–5 at 50%, ages 1–2 paying a ¥2,200 entry fee and babies free. It has 400 free parking spaces but no shuttle of its own: the shared Dial Bus from Kinugawa-Onsen Station costs ¥300, and buses back need booking at the front desk 15 minutes ahead. Kinugawa Onsen Sanraku is the easiest of the classic inns to reach from Kinugawa-Onsen Station — a 10-minute walk, or phone from the station and a car comes in a few minutes. Its 74㎡ Japanese rooms, with a main room and two smaller ones, let three-generation families put children to sleep in a separate room, and there are children's meals (2–5-year-olds sharing a bed pay ¥2,200) — but every room is a smoking room, there are no barrier-free rooms, and guests found little to do beyond the inn.
Kinugawa Onsen Hana no Yado Matsuya is a 3–5-minute walk from Kinugawa-Kōen Station, though its free car park is mostly a separate lot near the station and there's no convenience store nearby. Kinugawa Onsen Hotel Manyotei, about a 6-minute walk from Tōbu World Square Station, has kids' plans, a kids' corner, a trampoline and games, with 12-tatami rooms for five or six; there's no shuttle, and many stairs and level changes inside. Kinugawa Onsen Isshinkan, about 8 minutes from Kinugawa-Onsen Station on the Tōbu Dial Bus, has children's and infants' menus, family plans, two-room Japanese rooms and a spring-water pool, but its old building has steps on the way to rooms and baths, and there are no shops close by.

Best value
Kinugawa Onsen Hotel Manyotei, the only value-tier inn of the five, is the cheapest by far: two-meal plans run about ¥9,000–16,000 per person, and that includes free beer, highballs and oden in the lobby from 15:00 to 17:00, late-night soba, a free private bath and 90 minutes of drinks at dinner. It rates 4.0 across 728 reviews on one major site (service 4.2, rooms 3.6). The catch: self-service futons, payment on arrival, mould around sinks, lukewarm baths in July 2026 and buffets that ran out early, and in August 2026 the main open-air bath was running on heated tap water after an equipment fault. Kinugawa Onsen Isshinkan ran about ¥16,000–28,000 per person with two meals in 2026 — low for private-room dining and a kurhaus — but its cheap 'room not specified' plans drew the worst rooms.
Kinugawa Onsen Hana no Yado Matsuya's upper-floor river-view rooms start from about ¥16,800 per person for two sharing on the official site, often around ¥20,000 with its plated kaiseki, and it rates 3.96 across 1,412 reviews on one major site; its cheapest last-minute plans can mean a room without a bathroom. Kinugawa Onsen Asaya Hotel mostly runs about ¥19,000–30,000+ per person with two meals, onsen bath in the room included, and rates 4.7 across 8,387 reviews on one major site. Kinugawa Onsen Sanraku (about ¥27,000–44,000 per person in 2026) is the priciest, and pays it back in space and service: every room is 74㎡, and it rates 4.3 across 707 reviews on one major site, with service at 4.6.

What's in the water
Kinugawa Onsen Asaya Hotel draws its own spring, 'Kodakara-no-yu' — alkaline simple, pH 8.8, 37.1°C at source, per the inn's 2022 analysis — but one booking site lists the baths as diluted, heated and recirculated, the inn marks most in-room view baths and the private baths as recirculated, and two reviewers smelled chlorine; the 12th-floor Grand Twin is the one bath the inn explicitly calls free-flowing. Kinugawa Onsen Isshinkan also has its own spring (alkaline simple, 34°C at source), which the inn says is used 100% with no water added in every bath and the pool, but booking-site data lists the baths as heated and recirculated with filtration, and many reviewers find them lukewarm (one measured about 39°C).
Kinugawa Onsen Sanraku uses Kinugawa Onsen's alkaline simple spring (the inn lists 44.0°C for the hinoki open-air bath and 36.6°C for the main bath), and its FAQ and booking-site data say it is diluted, heated and recirculated with filtration; guests found the baths crowded before dinner but quiet in the morning. Kinugawa Onsen Hana no Yado Matsuya states that its baths use added water, heating and recirculation with filtration, though a 2024 blogger, first in, noticed no chlorine smell, and its rock open-air bath has nothing but trees and river opposite. Kinugawa Onsen Hotel Manyotei's posted analysis gives a weakly alkaline simple spring at 28.3°C with water added, heated in a recirculating system and chlorinated — despite booking-site claims of '100% source' water — and a hotel notice updated in late August 2026 said the main open-air bath had used heated tap water after an equipment fault; the hotel says a new spring supply is now in place.

A century-old, 39-room family inn with its own spring, a nine-tub 'kurhaus' bath, a warm-spring swimming pool and dinners served in private rooms — the building is tired, the water runs lukewarm, and some river-view rooms look out at an abandoned hotel

Kinugawa Onsen Sanraku
鬼怒川温泉 山楽
A polished 49-room inn where every room is 74㎡ and looks down on the Kinugawa gorge, with kaiseki served in your room or a private dining room and standout service — but the baths are shared and recirculated, every room is a smoking room, and the 1991 building shows its age

Kinugawa Onsen Hana no Yado Matsuya
鬼怒川温泉 花の宿 松や
A 1950s riverside inn with river views from almost every room, a rock open-air bath right above the Kinugawa gorge and its own path down to the riverbank — good-value kaiseki, but an ageing building, musty smells and patchy cleaning

Kinugawa Onsen Hotel Manyotei
鬼怒川温泉 ホテル万葉亭
A budget, near-all-inclusive onsen hotel on the Kinugawa gorge — free afternoon beer and oden, a crab-and-hotpot half-buffet with drinks, and a free private bath — but the building is old, the spring is diluted and recirculated, and 2026 guests report lukewarm baths, mould and thin buffets

How to choose
For an onsen bath in your own room and plenty to keep children busy, Asaya, if a crowded buffet and a recirculated spring won't bother you. For space, service and every meal in private, Sanraku — accepting shared-only baths and smoking rooms. For private-room meals and the most ways to bathe at a mid-range price, Isshinkan; for a plated kaiseki, a rock open-air bath over the river and the quietest end of town, Matsuya; and on a budget, Manyotei, for its near-all-inclusive extras. Whichever you pick, check the exact room: in Kinugawa, an onsen bath of your own or a renovated room often comes only with certain rooms or plans, some river-side rooms look out on derelict hotels, and cheap plans that leave the room to the inn can mean the worst rooms.

Kinugawa Onsen Asaya Hotel
鬼怒川温泉 あさやホテル
Kinugawa's big showpiece inn, founded in 1888: a soaring lobby atrium with glass lifts and a pipe organ, a 13th-floor open-air bath and a 100-dish buffet, with an onsen tub in every room — but the spring is heated and recirculated, the buffet gets crowded, and valley-side rooms look out on derelict hotels
