Hakone Yumoto Onsen Yoshiike Ryokan

A big 64-room inn wrapped around a 33,000㎡ garden that was once a Mitsubishi family villa, with six of its own free-flowing springs, seven minutes' walk from Hakone-Yumoto Station — but some rooms are dated, 'garden-side' doesn't always mean a view, and part of the Sansō wing is under renovation until January 2027
Yoshiike Ryokan, open since around 1940 (it marked 80 years in 2020 and ran an 85th-anniversary plan in 2026), sits on the former villa grounds of Iwasaki Yanosuke, Mitsubishi's second president: Sangetsuen, a stroll garden of about 10,000 tsubo with seven carp ponds, a 1904 villa and a tea house, both registered cultural properties. The inn owns six springs (sodium-calcium chloride, pH 8.4, up to 720 litres a minute) and says every shared and in-room bath is free-flowing with no recirculation, added water or heating — except the open-air tubs of the 2024 Hollywood Twin rooms, which its own page lists as recirculated. All 64 rooms have spring water in their baths. Few recent personal blogs exist (two 4travel stays, June 2022 and March 2026, both centred on the garden), so most recent evidence comes from booking-site reviews: 4.5 across 1,179 reviews on one major site (baths 4.7) and 4.41 across 541 on another. Guests in 2026 praise the garden walks, fireflies in June, soft spring water, generous garden-view dinners, a free-drinks lounge added in 2024 and a free summer pool. The complaints, also from 2026: a 'garden-side' end room that looked only at roofs, an old toilet and dated baths in the Sansō wing, rooms with floor chairs but no table, lukewarm outdoor baths, and a busy dining room where several reviewers found the largely overseas staff and guests made dinner less relaxed. Two-meal stays run about ¥22,000–30,000 per person.
Room Selection Guide
What the guests who stayed here actually recommendRecommended
Garden-side Japanese rooms in the Honkan or Ike-no-tō (pond wing), including the two-room family rooms
About 70% of rooms face Sangetsuen and the inn asks you to request 'garden side' when booking. The March 2026 4travel blogger's room had a large window over the whole garden, and a September 2026 reviewer watched the garden from dinner and the room. The connecting two-room types (up to 10 people) suit families: an August 2026 three-generation group and a May 2026 family with two toilets found them roomy. Standard rooms start at ¥27,500 per person with two meals.
Shiki-no-Ma rooms with a private open-air spring bath (four rooms), or the 2024 Hollywood Twins
Each Shiki-no-Ma room has a different open-air tub; Tōri, partly renovated in December 2022, has a hinoki tub and a queen bed, and a November 2025 guest there praised the bath's temperature and the dinner. From ¥48,400 per person. The six 2024 Hollywood Twins (from ¥50,050) drew praise in September 2026 for their silky in-room bath, but the inn notes their terrace bath is recirculated, and a February 2026 guest sat on a soaking-wet chair cushion.
Request To Avoid
End rooms, the Sansō wing's older rooms, and rooms without table and chairs
An April 2026 guest booked 'garden side' but got an end room that looked only at the roof below. A February 2026 guest in the Sansō found the toilet and baths old, and a June 2026 guest at the far end of the building faced long walks. Several 2026 reviewers noted rooms with only floor chairs. Part of the Sansō is being renovated from 1 September 2026 to 31 January 2027 (noisy work 9:00–17:00).

Dining Deep Dive
Breakfast Consensus
4.2/5A Japanese set breakfast from 7:30 in the garden-view dining rooms — rice from Aizu, miso soup and grilled salmon, with an extra fishcake dish brought out for the March 2026 blogger — generally liked, though a May 2026 reviewer found the breakfast service muddled
When booking, ask for a garden-side room that isn't at the end of a wing. Guests get the garden free (day visitors pay ¥500); fireflies light it from late May to early July, and the 2026 autumn illumination runs 10 October–23 December. The two private indoor baths cost ¥2,200 for 45 minutes and are booked only at the front desk from 10:30 that day. The guest lounge's drinks are free (soft drinks only, the 2026 blogger noted), and the outdoor spring-water pool is free for guests from June to September.
Dinner Insights
4.3/5'Yoshiike Japanese cuisine' from 18:00 in Hōshintei (Ike-no-tō, 2F) or Sangetsu (Honkan, 2F), both overlooking the garden, with private rooms for small groups. Reviewers in 2026 describe generous portions, careful presentation and attractive tableware; the March 2026 blogger ate at a garden-facing counter and noticed other plans got bigger dishes. Criticism: a noisy dining room (August 2026), undertrained serving staff (May 2026), a 'standard' course that felt aimed at overseas visitors, and a disappointing wagyu dish (June 2026). The inn won't change dishes for dislikes, allergies or religious reasons. The on-site Steak House Yoshiike, open over 40 years, is a separate-bill alternative.
Onsen & Wellness Realities
The inn's own six springs (sodium-calcium chloride, pH 8.4, 43–80°C at source), one rising in the garden and five piped from nearby, up to 720 litres a minute. The inn says every shared and in-room bath is free-flowing, with no recirculation, added water or heating; its room page, however, says the Hollywood Twin terrace baths are recirculated.
Men have a garden open-air bath, a 20-metre indoor bath and a 'cave' bath; women have a garden open-air bath, a hinoki bath and a granite bath. Open-air baths run 14:00–22:00 and 6:00–9:00, indoor baths 14:00–9:00, and day bathers use them too. The men's open-air bath has no washing area and is a dressed walk from the indoor bath. Reviewers praise the soft, clean-feeling water; some 2026 guests found the outdoor baths too lukewarm and a February 2026 guest found the washing and changing areas untidy. Every room's bath also uses spring water.
The inn's FAQ says tattooed guests are in principle not allowed in the shared baths or pool, but since 1 December 2023 they may use them if the tattoos can be covered by two cover stickers (10 × 14 cm; ¥250 each at the front desk). Every room's own bath uses spring water.
Local Warnings & Nuances
- 01
Check-in 14:00 (by 17:00 with dinner, 22:00 without), check-out 10:00. There's no inn shuttle; the Hakone ryokan association bus (¥200) runs from the station, and parking (70 cars) is free.
- 02
Part of the Sansō wing is being renovated from 1 September 2026 to 31 January 2027, with noisy work 9:00–17:00; the inn stays open.
- 03
Meals can't be changed for dislikes, allergies or religion — the inn will only remove ingredients that can be taken out, so tell it when booking.
- 04
A large inn: 64 rooms across three buildings linked by stairs and lifts, which a blogger's elderly parent found tiring. Many 2026 reviewers note mostly overseas staff and guests, and day visitors share the garden and baths.
- 05
Bookings are normally for two or more (solo stays on quiet weekdays on request). Children are welcome: primary-school children pay 70% of the adult rate, younger children 30–50% or ¥3,300 without meals or bedding.
