Japanese Guest Consensus

A valley hideaway with a famous standing bath and warm, attentive service — the French dinner is the one thing guests argue about

Myojinkan sits alone in a mountain valley above Matsumoto, and Japanese guests keep coming back for three things. The baths: a 24-hour standing bath beside the river (guests watch fish in the stream while they soak), a lukewarm reclining bath designed for lingering, and an octagonal indoor bath, plus rooms with their own onsen on the terrace. The service: a returning guest found the staff remembered a shiitake allergy from three years earlier, left a message spelled out in ginkgo leaves outside the window, and handed out free rice balls as a late-night snack; check-out is at noon. And the food — which is also where the disagreement lies. Dinner at the Nature French restaurant 'Sai' is local and ambitious (venison consommé scented with kuromoji wood, veal with wild mountain vegetables), and a 2024 guest called it 'very delicious French, with both meat and fish'. But a 2020 guest found the pairings 'too idiosyncratic' and the rabbit gamey, another noted courses came so slowly that some diners left before dessert, and everyone agrees breakfast is excellent. On one Japanese review site the inn ranks fourth of 80 in Matsumoto (3.79 out of 5), with the main complaints about getting there: a 30–40 minute shuttle, occasional waits, and a narrow final stretch of road.

Room Selection Guide

Recommended

  • Kumano (「然」 category, 72㎡ + 20㎡ terrace with private onsen)

A large room with its own open-air onsen on the terrace, built with a shallow section so you can lie back as in the reclining bath or sink in up to your shoulders at the deeper end.

  • Otaka (お鷹) Western-style room

The Western-style room a repeat guest chose when returning after three years for a two-night stay in November 2023 — and on that visit the staff still remembered their shiitake allergy.

Request To Avoid

  • Any room, if you're relying on the shuttle

The inn's shuttle from Matsumoto takes 30–40 minutes and reviewers mention waiting 10 minutes or more, and some wished check-in could start earlier. Plan your arrival so you still have time for the baths before dinner.

Dining Deep Dive

Breakfast Consensus

4.7/5

Western breakfast at the French restaurant — eggs Benedict with eggs from a local poultry farm, four kinds of bread, a house smoothie and local vegetables — or Japanese breakfast at Shinshu Dining TOBIRA

Even the guest who disliked the dinner called breakfast a dramatic improvement, so don't skip it — and with noon check-out there's time for a last bath afterwards.

Dinner Insights

4.1/5

Most guests choose French at Nature French 'Sai' on the fourth floor, where yukata are fine and chopsticks are provided; there is also a Japanese restaurant. Menus lean on local game and produce: venison consommé with kuromoji, asparagus with Meyer lemon, botan shrimp with sweet onion mousse, veal with wild vegetables, amadai and lamb. Opinion is split — praised for depth of flavour by some, called 'too idiosyncratic' and too sour by one 2020 guest — and one reviewer noted the courses came slowly enough that some diners left before dessert. Drinks ran ¥1,600 for a glass of wine and ¥850 for a beer in 2020.

Onsen & Wellness Realities

Water Type

Tobira Onsen hot-spring water in the public baths and in rooms with their own onsen. Our sources don't specify the mineral type.

Privacy & Atmosphere

Three public baths: the standing bath 'Setsugekka', open 24 hours, beside the river; the reclining bath 'Kūzan', kept lukewarm for long soaks; and 'Hakuryū' with an octagonal indoor bath. Reviewers praise how well they are kept.

Tattoo Policy

Not addressed in any source we read. Rooms with a private terrace onsen let you bathe without using the public baths.

Local Warnings & Nuances

  1. 01

Getting there: the inn is in a remote mountain valley, 30–40 minutes by the inn's shuttle from Matsumoto, and the last stretch of road is narrow enough that drivers must use passing places for oncoming cars.

  2. 02

Check-out is at noon, one of the most generous in our coverage.

  3. 03

Service touches mentioned by guests include valet parking, free late-night rice balls and staff who remember dietary needs from previous stays.

  4. 04

One winter reviewer found the Christmas decorations so extensive they 'had to crouch to walk' in places — worth knowing if you want pure calm in December.

  5. 05

Prices for two with dinner and breakfast run roughly ¥92,800–172,700 a night depending on room and booking site.
