Japanese Guest Consensus

The inn where Kawabata wrote 'Snow Country': silky, sulphurous 'egg water' that's genuinely free-flowing, the writer's preserved room, nightly screenings of the 1957 film and free local sake — in a plain concrete building with a simple breakfast

Takahan traces its spring to an ancestor who found it some 900 years ago, and it is where Kawabata Yasunari wrote 'Snow Country' between 1934 and 1937; his room, the Kasumi-no-ma, has been preserved (moved from the old wooden building) and staying guests can join a 17:00 tour and a nightly 20:00 screening of the 1957 film. Today it's a six-storey concrete inn of 35 rooms, and the draw is the 'tamago-no-yu': an alkaline simple sulphur spring (pH 9.6) welling up from a cave behind the inn at about 45°C, run fully free-flowing with no added water or heating — except that the outdoor baths are recirculated and heated in winter. The tubs are deliberately small to keep the water warm, and it's on the lukewarm side outside midsummer. Japanese guests rate it 4.6 across 655 reviews on one major site, 4.70 across 423 on another and 4.63 across 45 on a third, with baths and service highest; they rave about the silky water, the free sake from Niigata breweries in the lounge and at meals, and views from the renovated sixth-floor rooms. The inn itself warns its kaiseki is 'not flashy', and breakfast — often a buffet in 2026 — is the weakest category. Other gripes: the men's bath faces the car park, the women's bath is smaller with only four washing stations, there's one lift, and the building feels more hotel than ryokan. Most 2026 guests paid about ¥17,000–27,000 per person with two meals.

Room Selection Guide

Recommended

  • East-wing view floor (5th–6th floors)

About 32㎡ plus a sitting area, with bathrooms renovated in 2023 (shower room only) and beds on the 6th floor — 'choosing the 6th-floor view room was exactly right', a September 2026 guest wrote, watching Shinkansen trains below; several other 2026 reviewers praised the top-floor view and the renovated rooms.

  • Ginrei 317 and 318 (銀嶺), the only rooms with their own onsen bath

70–80㎡ with a semi-double twin, a Japanese living room and a view bath on the inn's spring, plus two toilets. One July 2026 guest found 318 had no TV in the bedroom; another noted a slightly noisy air conditioner in 317.

Request To Avoid

  • Unrenovated East-wing 3rd–4th floor 'Shōwa kotatsu' rooms and South-wing 3rd floor

The cheaper East-wing rooms (sold only on the official site) have a toilet but no bath, and a 2022 guest on the 4th floor found dated aluminium sashes, frayed tatami and few outlets — though the view was excellent. South-wing 3rd-floor rooms have no view by the inn's own description. Expect small steps inside rooms; a few 2026 guests found beds low or pillows hard.

Breakfast Consensus

3.7/5

Officially a set Japanese breakfast, but in 2026 usually a buffet — Yasuda yoghurt, noppe stew, house tofu and Tochio fried tofu are highlights; refills can lag and there are no partitions for solo diners

Book the 17:00 Kasumi-no-ma tour and the 20:00 'Snow Country' film at the front desk on arrival. Phone for the free shuttle after you reach Echigo-Yuzawa Station (it can't be booked ahead; every 30 minutes, 8:00–18:00) and buy anything you need near the station. Try the free sake-lees face packs in the post-bath lounge.

Dinner Insights

4.1/5

Served in the Matsuzaka dining room (screened tables, not private rooms) from 18:00: choose shabu-shabu, sukiyaki or a sashimi course, with kama-cooked Minami-Uonuma Koshihikari, house soba, grilled char and Echigo mochi-pork. The shabu-shabu is so generous that 2026 guests couldn't finish it, and free-flowing Niigata sake (Hakkaisan, Kakurei, Shirataki) is the recurring highlight. A 2022 blogger found the sashimi course's other dishes plain — 'a pass, not outstanding'. Allergy requests need three days' notice and cost ¥3,300.

Onsen & Wellness Realities

Water Type

An alkaline simple sulphur spring (pH 9.6) from a cave behind the inn, about 45°C at the source; the inn states no water is added and no temperature adjustment is made, and the baths are free-flowing — except the outdoor baths, which are recirculated and heated in winter. Tubs are disinfected daily.

Privacy & Atmosphere

One main bath, outdoor bath and sauna per side (the men's also has a cold plunge of mountain water), with no gender rotation and no private baths. Tubs are small so the water stays warm, and it's lukewarm except in midsummer. The men's bath and outdoor bath face the car park — a 2025 blogger said you're in full view if you stand. The women's bath is smaller, with only four washing stations (2026). Baths close about 9:30–12:30 for cleaning.

Tattoo Policy

No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. Only the two Ginrei rooms have their own onsen bath.
