Nishimuraya's big modern sister hotel in a forest garden: warm, polished service, kaiseki or Italian-French dinners and three themed private onsen spas — but the in-room open-air baths are plain heated water, the shared baths are recirculated, and breakfast is an ordinary buffet
Shogetsutei is the annex of Nishimuraya, the Kinosaki inn founded more than 160 years ago, and shares a reservation line with its sister, Nishimuraya Honkan. Billed as a 'new style' of ryokan, it is a 98-room house set in a 50,000-tsubo forest garden at the far end of town, with a lobby lounge facing a waterfall, a summer garden pool, a fitness room, a dog hotel and a wedding chapel. Japanese guests rate it 4.68 across 136 reviews on one leading site (service 4.76, food 4.77) and 4.7 across 1,124 on another, where dinner scores 4.8 but breakfast only 4.3. Reviewers from 2022 to 2026 single out the staff — surprise birthday cakes, a forgotten item driven to the station, a room swapped on request — plus crab sashimi in season, the monthly kaiseki served in a private dining room or your room, and dinners at the in-house Italian-French restaurant Ricca. The three bookable private spas, each with a hot-spring open-air bath, bedrock sauna and living room, get some of the warmest praise. Know before you book: by the inn's own note, the open-air baths in rooms use heated plain water, not onsen; the shared baths are Kinosaki's piped supply with water added, heated and recirculated; and the Comfort Twins have only a shower. Complaints in 2024–2026 centre on a generic breakfast buffet, loud tour groups, a musty room and a crowded outdoor bath. On one booking site, two-meal plans start around ¥50,600 per person in a twin and ¥63,800 in a room with an open-air bath; matsuba crab plans run about ¥95,000–124,000.
Room Selection Guide
What the guests who stayed here actually recommendRecommended
Niwa-no-tō rooms with an open-air bath (rock or ceramic tub), or the Keigetsu (桂月) special room
Japanese rooms facing the forest garden, with a choice of a rock or ceramic open-air tub; the one-off Keigetsu suite adds a Western-style room and a natural-stone open-air bath. A September 2026 couple in Keigetsu found the rock bath wide and relaxing even though it isn't onsen water; another September 2026 couple asked to change rooms and was shown an alternative first. Plans for these rooms start around ¥63,800 per person with two meals.
Tsuki-no-tō Comfort Twin (44㎡) or Comfort Suite (90㎡), for beds and Ricca dinners
Western rooms with Simmons beds, a sofa and a walk-in closet; the cheapest way in, with two-meal plans from about ¥50,600 per person. Several 2026 reviewers in Comfort Twins were delighted, and a 2022 traveller found them spacious. A barrier-free Universal Twin is also available.
Request To Avoid
Comfort Twins, if you want a bathtub or a view — and the standard Japanese rooms, if you expect luxury
Both January 2024 travellers in twins found only a shower room and no tub, and one had a window onto the road. In-room dinner isn't offered in Western rooms. In June 2026 a Niwa-no-tō room with an open-air bath smelled musty on arrival until staff brought a deodoriser; a family in a standard Niwa-no-tō Japanese room found it pleasant but not special, looking onto the pool courtyard.

Dining Deep Dive
Breakfast Consensus
4.0/5A Japanese-leaning buffet from 7:30 (grilled dried flounder, crab-sansho, Tajima-beef curry) — praised by some, but the weakest score here: 2024–2026 reviewers called it ordinary hotel fare with no live cooking, poor value for the price, and found the beef curry gone by 7:40
Use your welcome-drink ticket in the lobby lounge, which looks onto the garden waterfall. Book a private spa early (¥8,800 per room for 70 minutes, up to four people; slots from 15:00 to about 21:30 and 7:30). The free shuttle into town runs every 30 minutes, 15:00–18:00 and 20:00–22:00, but next morning only drops off. Leave bags at the station tourist office and the inn collects them.
Dinner Insights
4.5/5The monthly kaiseki is served in a private dining room or, for ¥2,200 extra per person, in your room; an October 2026 menu included steamed red snow crab, hamo and matsutake shabu-shabu and black-wagyu teppanyaki. Matsuba crab plans run from early November to March, red snow crab from September. Ricca serves Italian-French courses with Tajima beef aged over two months — praised in 2022 and 2024, but pricey, and one 2024 winter plan used frozen crab (stated when booking). Some plans send you to Sanpō Nishimuraya in town by shuttle. Critics in 2026 found the kaiseki banquet-like and dessert only fruit.
Onsen & Wellness Realities
Kinosaki's chloride spring (pH 7.3), piped from the town's shared supply. A major booking site lists the shared baths as having water added, heated and recirculated with filtration. The official room pages state that in-room open-air baths use heated plain water, not onsen, to protect Kinosaki's spring resources; the large baths and private spas use onsen.
The Gekka-no-yu baths each have a large indoor bath, an outdoor bath, a cold plunge and a dry sauna (5:30–10:00 and 12:00–24:30), with free barley tea and orange juice outside. Three private 'forest spas' — Japanese Gingetsu, Balinese FU-RO and Chinese Rinsen — each pair an onsen open-air bath with a bedrock sauna and lounge. Reviewers find the large baths clean and calm, but in September 2026 one found the outdoor bath small and crowded with eight people, and in October 2025 a loud tour group hogged the sauna and cold plunge.
No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. The private spas can be booked by the room.
Local Warnings & Nuances
- 01
Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:00.
- 02
It's a 98-room house that takes tour and company groups; in June 2026 a loud group arrived at check-in, and in October 2025 another took over the sauna.
- 03
The inn is at the quiet far end of town. The ryokan association's free bus meets express trains (12:00–18:00) if you say when you'll arrive; the inn's own shuttle into town runs from 15:00 but stops at night. Sato-no-yu, one of the seven public baths, is closed.
- 04
Families are well looked after: baby futons, bottle sterilisers, a free summer garden pool and a ¥3,300 children's dinner; a paid dog hotel takes small and medium dogs.
- 05
Rates jump in crab season (early November to March); September–October brings red snow crab and matsutake at lower prices.
