Hoshino Resorts' mountainside inn where every one of the 49 rooms looks across the Kirishima highlands to Sakurajima, with a glass slope car down to a bathhouse in a pampas-grass meadow — but most rooms have only a shower, Sakurajima often hides in haze, and recent reviews grumble about grubby windows and thin dinners
KAI Kirishima opened on 29 January 2021 as the 17th inn in Hoshino Resorts' KAI brand, high on Mt Takachiho-no-mine, where Japanese myth says the gods came down to earth. All 49 rooms are Japanese-style 'Satsuma Shirasu' rooms with headboards of volcanic shirasu earth and a wall of glass facing south over the Kirishima highlands to Kagoshima Bay and Sakurajima. Bloggers who stayed from 2022 to 2026 describe gasping when the curtains open. The other highlight is the bath: a glass slope car glides about 50 m down to a bathhouse in a pampas-grass meadow, with a free-flowing hot tub, a lukewarm tub and an open-air bath with nothing in front but grassland and sky. At night the staff, masked as gods, perform the 20-minute 'Tenson Kōrin ENBU' drum dance. Dinner is a kaiseki built around Kagoshima black pork shabu-shabu in a broth topped up with freshly shaved bonito, finished with soba. On one major Japanese booking site it rates 4.4 across 506 reviews, with rooms at 4.5 and breakfast and service lowest at 4.3. The complaints are consistent, though. Sakurajima is often lost in haze or cloud, and several 2025–2026 guests found the picture windows dirty. Some found dinners small or plain and the dining room noisy and slow. Others mention dated fittings, narrow soft beds and the slope car being the only way to the bath, even in rain. The standard rooms have a shower only. Two meals for two cost about ¥62,700 in a standard room on the regular plan, or about ¥50,000 with an early-booking discount.
Room Selection Guide
What the guests who stayed here actually recommendRecommended
Japanese room with open-air bath (42 m², up to 3 guests)
The same layout as the standard room, but the shower area leads to a bath that becomes open-air when you slide the windows fully open; the inn says it is filled with Kirishima's sulphur spring, and a 2022 blogger on the fourth floor noticed the faint sulphur smell and white mineral flakes. Guests in 2023 and September 2026 called the early-morning soak looking at Sakurajima the best part of the stay. About ¥82,500 for two with meals on the regular plan in October 2026. A 2023 blogger found the washroom cramped and awkward because the bath takes up space.
Special room 'Panorama Room' (69 m², only 3 rooms)
Glass on three sides, looking towards the Kirishima mountains, Miyazaki and Kagoshima Bay, plus an open-air bath. Guests in July and August 2026 loved it, though a January 2026 guest found the bathroom poorly cleaned. About ¥108,900 for two with meals on the regular plan.
Request To Avoid
Standard Japanese rooms (42 m² for 3, or 60 m² corner rooms for 4)
The cheapest rooms (about ¥62,700 for two with meals on the regular plan, ¥69,300 for the corner room) have a shower only, so you depend on the bathhouse at the bottom of the slope car. Beds sit on a raised platform; a 2022 blogger found the bedding short, and guests in October 2025 and April 2026 found the beds narrow or too soft to sleep well. Window glass was dirty for guests in November and December 2025, and a June 2026 guest found dust and dead insects in an in-room bathtub.

Breakfast Consensus
4.2/5Japanese set built around satsuma-jiru (chicken and vegetable miso soup), satsuma-age fish cakes you toast at the table and rice or tofu topped with freshly shaved bonito — or a Western set (not served 1–3 January). Bloggers love it; some guests found it small or repetitive on a second morning
Book the 17:30 or 19:30 dinner slot and your breakfast time early — a 2025 guest who phoned ahead still got an unwanted time. Get to the lobby lounge 10–20 minutes before the 21:15 ENBU dance for a good seat. The cheapest rates (up to about 25% off when booking 90 days ahead) are prepaid and non-refundable, as a 2026 blogger warns. Drivers: a July 2026 guest missed the unsigned guest entrance at the car park and ended up at the staff entrance.
Dinner Insights
4.0/5Served at 17:30 or 19:30 in semi-private rooms. The 'Satsuma shabu-shabu' kaiseki opens with a fried twist on akumaki, the local lye-soaked rice cake, followed by a horaku platter of hassun and sashimi such as kibinago. The main course is black pork shabu-shabu: the server adds freshly shaved bonito to the broth, and you finish with soba in the same broth. Bloggers from 2022 to 2026 loved the bonito broth, the playful tableware and the shochu pairing. But booking-site reviews from late 2025 to 2026 call the courses small, with only a few slices of pork and three thin vegetable tempura. Others found it plain, or slow to arrive in a noisy room; a 2022 blogger found the courses came almost too fast. A December 2025 guest who stayed in 2022 noted that the old steamed meat course now appears only on the third night of a three-night stay.
Onsen & Wellness Realities
Kirishima Onsen, a simple sulphur spring (hydrogen sulphide type, pH 5.6 in the opening press release). The official site describes it as free-flowing with water added, and calls the indoor 'atsu-yu' (hot) tub free-flowing; but one major Japanese booking site lists it as water added, heated and recirculated with filtration — so expect a mix rather than pure free-flowing water.
One bathhouse in a pampas-grass meadow, reached only by a glass slope car from the first floor of the guest wing (about 3 minutes, called with a button or tablet). Each side has a dim indoor hot tub, a lukewarm tub and an open-air bath with no roof and an open view of grassland and sky — wonderful for stars and sunrise, but bright in summer sun. The sides don't swap between men and women; open 14:30–1:00 and 5:00–10:00, for staying guests only. The open-air tub is kept cool (36°C one July), and guests in August 2026 found it too lukewarm on chilly evenings. In rain you walk from the slope car under an umbrella, and a March 2026 guest was stung by a bee hidden in a bath towel. A rest house by the slope-car stop offers local drinks and ice lollies.
Hoshino Resorts doesn't ban tattoos outright, but its group policy, linked from KAI Kirishima's site, says staff may refuse use of the large bath if they judge other guests could feel afraid. A room with its own open-air bath avoids the issue.
Local Warnings & Nuances
- 01
Check-in 14:30, check-out 11:00 — moved from 12:00 in April 2026, which caught out an April 2026 guest booked under the old time.
- 02
There is no shuttle: take a taxi from JR Kirishima-Jingū Station (about 15 minutes; the inn advises booking one yourself in advance) or drive. From Kagoshima Airport it is about 45 minutes by car, or bus, train and taxi. Parking is free, with EV chargers.
- 03
The view depends on the weather and the volcanoes: many guests saw Sakurajima only faintly or not at all through haze, cloud or rain, though some got a sea of clouds instead. In July 2025, eruptions at Shinmoedake and Sakurajima worried visitors, but the inn said everything was running as normal.
- 04
Children are welcome (under-sevens can share a bed, and there are children's meals), but an April 2026 parent felt the dining staff were cold to families, while a July 2026 guest was unhappy to find small children there.
- 05
One dog-friendly room (up to two medium dogs of 20 kg or less), bookable only on the official site. The whole building is non-smoking apart from a smoking area.
