Japanese Guest Consensus

Every room has a bath of 100% spring water, the lounge pours free beer, sake and cheesecake from afternoon to midnight, and a free shuttle runs from central Sapporo — Hokkaido's easiest onsen escape, if you don't mind stairs and busy dinners

Suizantei opened in 1957 as the Jozankei Daiichi Hotel and took its current name in 2002 from a seal-script inscription a calligrapher left during a stay. It has about 51–57 rooms (sources differ), all with their own bath of the inn's sodium chloride spring — three sources rising from the Toyohira riverbed at around 69°C — from 45㎡ hinoki-bath twins to 160㎡ special rooms with a shallow lie-down bath and a beer server; it's for guests of primary-school age and up. The draw that every review mentions is the second-floor lounge: free coffee and sweets in the afternoon, the house cheesecake at 16:30, beer, highballs and sake from 19:00 to 23:00, and a bookshop of some 2,500 titles. Stays include the group's '36-hour stay' — a bath-and-sauna facility from 11:00 on arrival and another hot spring until 23:00 after check-out. Japanese guests rate it 4.5 across 3,325 reviews on one major site and 4.47 across 1,451 on another. Dinners range from a ¥6,000 casual course to a ¥30,000 premium one with charcoal grilling and over 100 sakes. The caveats: the in-room 'free-flowing' baths are often a fill-and-temper system in practice, the large baths' treatment isn't stated and one guest found them all lukewarm, the building is on a slope with many stairs, and 2026 reviewers mention rushed or slow dinners, small portions, a crowded lounge and new staff still finding their feet. Most 2026 reviewers paid over ¥30,000 per person.

Room Selection Guide

Recommended

  • Special rooms Renju (連珠), Shōfū (松風) and Shihō (至寶)

120–160㎡ with 24-hour baths of 100% spring water and a 6cm-deep lie-down bath, free fridge drinks and, in Renju and Shōfū, a beer server. A 2023 blogger in Shōfū praised the free bar, Mikimoto bath products and Dyson dryer; a 2024 guest preferred Shihō's sixth-floor view, though its Wi-Fi was weak and the projector image poor.

  • 75㎡ view-bath rooms, including the sauna rooms

Japanese-Western rooms with a 'view bath' whose windows open (not a true open-air bath), mountain-side rooms where you may spot Ezo squirrels, and two rooms with a private HARVIA sauna that a November 2025 guest loved. A May 2025 stay in a 60㎡ view-bath twin cost ¥86,800 before an ¥8,000 coupon.

Request To Avoid

  • The 60㎡ universal-design deluxe twin, and anyone with limited mobility

In 2026 guests found this accessible room dim, with a step into the bath, no partition at the changing area and a location at the far end of a corridor. The whole inn is built on a slope with stairs on the way to the dining rooms and large baths (lobby to room entrance is wheelchair-accessible). Several guests found the in-room tub must be topped up with hot source water and cooled by hand rather than flowing continuously.

Dining Deep Dive

Breakfast Consensus

4.3/5

A half-buffet: a set tray with charcoal-grilled fish and a three-tier box, plus a buffet with Yumepirika rice, Biei milk and house-made tofu

Book the free 'Yukemuri' shuttle from Ōdōri in central Sapporo by 19:00 the day before (11:30, 14:40 and 17:00), and use the 36-hour stay: the Kyūjitsu Building bath and sauna from 11:00 on arrival and the Koganeyu hot spring until 23:00 after check-out, at no extra charge.

Dinner Insights

4.2/5

No in-room dining: dinner is at Kuwanoki (with a counter facing the charcoal grill), in semi-private rooms at Shōan, or at the premium Yuai Nanaseki. Courses run from ¥6,000 to ¥30,000, with meat cut daily by a Jozankei butcher, vegetables from the group's farm and over 100 sakes including Jūyondai and Aramasa; the ¥10,000 Suizan-gozen is the most popular. Bloggers describe botan prawns, salmon hotpot, tuna, sea urchin and steak. 2026 complaints: dishes rushed out or barely arriving on busy nights, small portions on the casual course, no rice refills, and cold tempura after a misunderstood request.

Onsen & Wellness Realities

Water Type

A sodium chloride spring blended from three of the inn's own sources rising naturally from the Toyohira riverbed, about 69°C on average. The detached Mori-no-yu is officially 100% free-flowing with no heating or added water; the large baths' treatment isn't stated.

Privacy & Atmosphere

Two large baths that swap between men and women — Hisen-no-yu (six tubs including a jacuzzi, cold bath, open-air bath and sauna) and Katsuragi-no-yu (an open-air bath facing a 300-year-old katsura tree) — open 13:00–3:00 and 5:00–10:00. Since summer 2025 Mori-no-yu is a private-hire bathhouse (¥4,400 per hour for guests), free and gender-separated 6:00–9:00. There's also a private open-air bath on the seventh floor and a private sauna (¥4,400 per hour). One July 2026 guest found every large bath lukewarm.

Tattoo Policy

No policy found on the official site — contact the inn. With a bath in every room you never need to share.

Local Warnings & Nuances

  1. 01

Guests must be of primary-school age or older (since April 2022).

  2. 02

Check-in 15:00, check-out 11:00. Hokkaido's accommodation tax (¥300–1,000 per person per night, by rate) has applied since April 2026.

  3. 03

Getting there: the free shuttle from Ōdōri, the Jōtetsu bus from JR Sapporo Station (about 75 minutes), or about 44 minutes by car from Sapporo.

  4. 04

Don't confuse it with the adults-oriented sister inn Suizantei Club Jozankei (a 10-minute walk away) or the Suizantei at Lake Shikotsu.

  5. 05

Bringing your own drinks isn't allowed (¥1,100 corkage in special cases); wheat and buckwheat allergies can't be catered for.
