A friendly 64-room family inn with Iwamuro's only private hot-spring well, a sulphur spring that shifts from clear to green to milky, and a much-loved country breakfast — but the buildings are dated, dinner is often in a big open hall, and only three rooms have their own bath
Fujiya is a long-running 64-room inn in Iwamuro Onsen, a quiet spa town near Mount Yahiko on the Niigata plain, run alongside its sister inn Yumeya. Its draw is the Kaminogō spring it drilled in 2012 — the only privately owned well in Iwamuro: a sulphur-sodium-calcium chloride spring (pH 8.0) that comes up clear and turns green, then milky, with time and temperature. It fills a top-floor bath with a hinoki outdoor tub facing the hills, one bookable private bath and three rooms with their own open-air tub, all described by the inn as straight from its own source; the inn doesn't publish whether the big bath is heated or recirculated. Japanese guests rate it 4.6 across 939 reviews on one major site (cleanliness 4.7, service 4.6) and 4.46 across 742 on another. Most of the recent evidence comes from those booking-site reviews rather than blogs: from June to September 2026 guests praised the gently sulphurous water, a handmade breakfast buffet of local vegetables and Koshihikari rice, whole salt-grilled nodoguro at dinner, free soft-serve, amazake and dorayaki in the lounge, and warm, flexible staff who meet trains. A 2023 travelogue called it 'the best ryokan, food and baths alike'. Complaints from 2025–2026: dinner in a bright, unpartitioned banquet hall, tired loungewear, old single rooms with a torn screen, a noisy air conditioner, a small outdoor tub, and neighbours heard through the adjoining open-air-bath rooms. Two-meal plans start around ¥18,800 per person, about ¥31,400 with a private bath.
Room Selection Guide
What the guests who stayed here actually recommendRecommended
Open-air-bath rooms Botan (牡丹), Kyorai (去来) and Tokufuji (特富士)
The only rooms with the inn's own spring: an open-air tub 68cm deep with its own washing spot (hinoki in Tokufuji), facing a small courtyard garden, from 10 mats (Botan) to 12.5 + 6 mats with a sitting area (Tokufuji, up to eight people). A July 2026 guest loved the constantly flowing room bath, and an August 2026 couple who were lukewarm about dinner still singled out the room bath. Two-meal plans start around ¥28,200–31,400 per person.
West wing sukiya rooms (12.5 mats) and the Nagomi suite
Every West wing room faces the Japanese garden, and the inn says they're often used for entertaining; the Nagomi suite adds a twin bedroom and living room for multi-generation families, and a September 2026 parent-and-adult-child pair found it modern and spotless despite the old exterior. The Garden View Twins, renewed in spring 2024, are the newest rooms.
Request To Avoid
Single rooms and older East wing rooms
A September 2026 solo guest found the single room's door heavy, the fittings old, a window screen torn so insects got in at night, and no view; another single was rated just 3 for the room. Some East wing rooms have steps at the entrance and toilet. The three open-air-bath rooms sit side by side — the inn itself warns they can feel lively, and a November 2025 Tokufuji guest heard the neighbours in their bath and saw pipes not shown in photos.

Breakfast Consensus
4.4/5The 'country breakfast' buffet (7:15–8:30 last entry): steamed local vegetables, charcoal-grilled dishes, soy-milk tofu and specially grown Koshihikari rice, mostly handmade and lightly seasoned — praised again and again in 2026 reviews
Ask for free pickup from JR Iwamuro or Yahiko station when booking (until 18:00, two people or more, booked two days ahead), or take the free 12:35 shuttle from Tsubame-Sanjo Shinkansen station, which can drop you at Yahiko Shrine. Hit the lounge on arrival for self-serve soft-serve, amazake and build-your-own dorayaki. The private bath costs ¥2,200 for 45 minutes — reserve it when booking.
Dinner Insights
4.3/5Kaiseki of about eight courses from 18:00, changed every three months — the autumn 2026 menu runs from a dobin-mushi of sea bream and maitake to snow crab and noppe stew — under head chef Seiichi Takano, who oversees both Fujiya's and Yumeya's kitchens. Plans add whole salt-grilled nodoguro (sometimes brought out on a charcoal brazier) and Niigata wagyu. Most 2026 reviewers loved the delicate, generous food, but an August 2026 guest found the tuna sashimi smelly and the nodoguro too salty, and a September 2026 solo guest disliked eating in a brightly lit open banquet hall; private dining rooms exist, and families with young children are seated in one where possible.
Onsen & Wellness Realities
The inn's own Kaminogō well, drilled in 2012 and the only private spring in Iwamuro: sulphur-sodium-calcium chloride (pH 8.0). It comes up clear and turns green, then milky; black sulphur flakes may cling to the tub and silver jewellery tarnishes. The inn calls all its baths 100% source water and the room baths free-flowing; it doesn't say whether the shared baths are heated or recirculated.
A top-floor indoor bath, Yama no Oto, looking towards Iwamuro's small 'Fuji', with a hinoki outdoor tub (15:00–22:00, 6:00–10:00) and a sauna; one hinoki private bath (15:30–22:00, ¥2,200 for 45 minutes). Guests praise the views of the hills and the gently sulphurous water; complaints are that the outdoor tub feels full with four people, lighting drowns out the stars, the sauna has no cold plunge and the changing room has no baskets. A guest who had stayed at a neighbouring inn missed Iwamuro's famous black water, which Fujiya's spring is not.
