Ikaho Onsen Tsukagoshiya Shichibee

An Edo-era Ikaho inn whose indoor bath pours the iron-brown 'golden' spring free-flowing, with warm, attentive service and table-grilled Gunma beef at modest prices — but the outdoor baths aren't hot-spring water, meals are mostly in halls, and 2026 reviews flag an ageing building
Tsukagoshiya Shichibee dates from the Bunkyū era at the end of the Edo period — the inn gives 1863 — and calls itself an inn loved by the painter-poet Takehisa Yumeji. The family company moved to the present site in 1963 and adopted the Shichibee name in 2004; the building is modern Japanese in style, with mostly tatami rooms, banquet halls and a 180-seat convention hall that hint at its group-tour side. It sits on a steep lane 10–15 minutes' walk below Ikaho's stone steps. The draw is the water: the inn says it is one of only eight ryokan holding rights to Ikaho's source, and its indoor bath runs the brown, iron-rich Kogane-no-yu ('golden water') free-flowing — so dense that one 2026 guest watched the sediment swirl up 'like miso soup' and found their towel tinted brown. Japanese guests rate it 4.40 across 934 reviews on Rakuten Travel, with service at 4.57 and baths at 4.51; first-hand blogs date from 2022 to 2024, so most recent evidence comes from booking-site reviews. Those reviews and the blogs praise the staff (pick-ups from the bus stop and lifts to the stone steps), roomy 10–12-mat rooms and renovated bedroom suites, dinners built around Gunma beef, pork or chicken grilled at the table with rice cooked in your own small pot, and konnyaku daifuku for dessert. The catches: the outdoor baths are not hot-spring water, and two October 2026 guests noticed chlorine there; meals are mostly served in halls. Other 2026 complaints include a dirty toilet, dust and musty smells in an older building, untidy changing rooms, sold-out vending machines, and two guests who felt the food had slipped or didn't match the price. Two-meal plans on Rakuten run about ¥14,300–24,200 per person for two sharing.
Room Selection Guide
What the guests who stayed here actually recommendRecommended
The bedroom suites (Japanese room plus twin bedroom, non-smoking, Mt Akagi view) and the Universal Design rooms (54㎡)
The newer two-room type opened in March 2023 according to a guide site; a September 2026 guest found it 'too big for two', with a new washbasin, toilet, sofa and dressing table and a view of Mt Akagi, and an August 2026 family loved the bright, renovated look. These have a toilet but no bath. The barrier-free Universal Design rooms (twin beds and a bath) also drew full marks in September 2026. A blogger who stayed in November 2024 found the bedroom-at-the-back layout ideal for a three-generation family, though there's no door between the rooms.
Special room (12 mats + twin room + living room, hinoki bath)
About 60㎡ with its own hinoki tub, set apart from other rooms and quiet, according to an August 2026 guest — who also found cobwebs on the shoji, a storehouse-like smell and a musty air conditioner. It's a smoking room (heated or e-cigarettes only from January 2027). Rakuten lists it at about ¥24,200 per person with two meals.
Request To Avoid
Rooms on last-minute and room-only plans, and the bed-and-view rooms with a shower only
Last-minute and room-only plans don't let you choose the room, whether it has a bath, or smoking versus non-smoking. A 2022 blogger on the fifth floor looked straight into trees. 2026 reviewers mention a musty, dated room (September), dust balls (October), fusuma noise next door (January) and, in April, a dirty toilet in a bedroom suite. In December 2025 a family found the shower-only room too cold for bathing a baby.

Dining Deep Dive
Breakfast Consensus
4.1/5A set Japanese breakfast in the dining hall (7:30 or 8:00 in 2024) with rice cooked in a small pot just before serving, steamed chicken and vegetables and Gunma's okkirikomi noodle stew — well liked, though one August 2026 guest would have preferred a buffet
Call from the bus stop for a pick-up, and ask the front desk for a lift to the stone steps before or after check-in — the slope outside is steep. A 2023 blogger enjoyed a lobby happy hour after the bath. Order the freshly fried maitake tempura as an extra at dinner, and buy the konnyaku daifuku (filling changes monthly) as a souvenir.
Dinner Insights
4.0/5The Shichibee-zen course: starter, sashimi, a seasonal dish, teppanyaki of your chosen Akagi beef (replacing Jōshū beef), Jōshū Rokkoku pork or Akagi chicken, kamameshi rice cooked at the table and konnyaku daifuku; gourmet plans add a three-meat platter or Akagi sirloin. Served at set times (18:00 or 19:00 in 2024) in a large hall, at the table-seated dining room Kaori, or in private rooms on some plans. Reviewers love the pot-cooked rice and tender beef, and the inn handled allergies carefully in 2026, but other 2026 guests found few dishes, a meal not worth the price, or quality 'clearly lower than before'.
Onsen & Wellness Realities
Ikaho's Kogane-no-yu: a calcium-sodium sulfate-bicarbonate-chloride spring (neutral, hypotonic) that turns brown as its iron oxidises. The inn says it is one of only eight ryokan with rights to the source and runs it free-flowing in the indoor large bath. The outdoor baths are not hot-spring water, according to the official site.
The indoor garden bath Hototogisu-no-yu has a hotter and a slightly cooler tub of opaque brown water, open 15:00–10:00 (closed for cleaning from 10:00). Beside it, the hinoki outdoor baths Hoshizuki-no-yu (men) and Kagetsu-no-yu (women) hold clear heated water — pleasant for the open sky but lukewarm with a chlorine smell for two October 2026 guests. There are saunas, though one September 2026 guest couldn't use them. No private onsen baths, and no rooms with their own onsen bath; reviewers also mention hair on the changing-room floor (August 2026) and a hard bath mat.

Local Warnings & Nuances
- 01
Check-in 15:00–19:00 (call if arriving after 18:00), check-out 10:00. You can park, use the lobby and leave luggage before check-in, and parking is free.
- 02
Meals are mostly in a shared hall; ask for a private-room plan if you want more privacy.
- 03
From 4 January 2027, smoking rooms allow heated or e-cigarettes only; traditional cigarettes go to the smoking area by the entrance.
- 04
Allergies must be declared when booking — requests within three days of arrival may not be met, and the kitchen can't fully exclude allergens or dashi.
- 05
Children are welcome, with family plans, children's menus, baby food and baby gear on request, but a January 2026 parent of a one-year-old found the rooms noisy and the inn not ideal for toddlers. Adults pay a ¥50 Kogane-no-yu conservation fee.
