Best ryokan in Noboribetsu Onsen: 6 inns compared on onsen, food and price
Six Noboribetsu Onsen ryokan compared: milky sulphur water, onsen baths in the room, food, history, families and value — with the catch at each inn.
Updated Oct 31, 2026
Noboribetsu Onsen, in Hokkaido, is a sulphur-spring town below Jigokudani (Hell Valley), about 10 minutes by taxi or 15 by bus from JR Noboribetsu Station and about an hour by taxi or bus from New Chitose Airport; expect a strong sulphur smell, in the air and on your clothes. Our six reviewed inns are spread around town: Takinoya and its annex Takinoya Bekkan Tamanoyu three minutes' walk from the bus terminal; Ryotei Hanayura in the middle of town, joined to its sister Park Hotel Gatei, with the Park Hotel-mae bus stop at its door; Oyado Kiyomizuya backing onto a stream at the quiet edge of town, about ten minutes' walk from the terminal; Noboribetsu Onsen Kashoutei Hanaya at the quiet entrance to the resort by the Tsutsujibashi bus stop; and Bourou Noguchi Noboribetsu at the quiet upper end of town, about 15 minutes' gentle uphill walk from the terminal. Takinoya, Hanayura and Bourou Noguchi are premium inns, Hanaya and Kiyomizuya classic, and Tamanoyu is our value pick; two-meal prices run from about ¥35,200 for two at Tamanoyu to around ¥100,000 for two in Takinoya's onsen rooms and about ¥110,000 in Hanayura's largest rooms.
In Noboribetsu the question isn't whether the water is good — all six draw on the town's famous sulphur springs — but how much of it you get to yourself and how it is run. Every one of Bourou Noguchi's 40 suites has its own onsen bath; at the other inns only some rooms do, or none. Hanaya and Kiyomizuya call their water 100% free-flowing, Hanayura says its shared baths are partly diluted and heated, and a blogger or booking site reports water added at Hanaya (in summer), Bourou Noguchi and Tamanoyu. None of the six publishes a tattoo policy, so ask directly. Takinoya and Tamanoyu both warned in October 2026 that their booking system may have leaked guest details, and Hokkaido's accommodation tax (¥100–500 per person per night) has applied since April 2026. Below, the six are sorted by what you're travelling for, each with its scores, prices and main catch, taken from our full report on each ryokan.
Best for a private onsen in your room
Bourou Noguchi Noboribetsu is the one inn where every room has its own onsen: all 40 suites, 50–100㎡, have a big bath of milky sulphur water — large enough for two adults, and for four according to several guests — that you can use at any hour, and in most the window slides fully open so it becomes almost an open-air bath. Because everyone has a private bath, the basement baths are almost always empty. The cheapest way in is a 50㎡ Junior Suite, from ¥81,856 for two with two meals on Ikyu (October 2026), but the inn is adults-only, most suites are twin-bed rooms rather than tatami, and a September 2026 guest found mould on an in-room bath ceiling. Ryotei Hanayura gives 27 of its 37 rooms a hinoki open-air bath of free-flowing sulphur water — the 54㎡ Japanese rooms with open-air bath are the reason to book — from about ¥74,000–89,000 for two with two meals (October 2026); the water runs very hot, and several 2026 guests couldn't get in until they had cooled it with the tap.
At Takinoya only the ten D rooms and the two 92㎡ DW rooms have their own open-air bath of free-flowing spring water — around ¥100,000 for two, by a blogger's rule of thumb — and bloggers warn the D rooms are hard to book; the hinoki or view baths in the AW, AY, CW and CY rooms hold ordinary water, not onsen. Noboribetsu Onsen Kashoutei Hanaya has a single onsen room, Botan, a 34㎡ Japanese-Western room for up to five, where a 2026 blogger paid ¥39,100 per person and called the milky private bath 'the best'; book early. Takinoya Bekkan Tamanoyu lists no rooms with their own onsen — only three rooms have a bathroom at all — but its family bath, with a very small outdoor tub for two, can be booked for 50 minutes: plans with a slot start at ¥39,500 for two, and a 2022 blogger paid ¥2,700 for a free slot. Oyado Kiyomizuya lists no private hire bath; its two small shared baths swap between men and women.

Read the ConsensusBest food
Noboribetsu Onsen Kashoutei Hanaya and Oyado Kiyomizuya are the food inns, and both serve dinner and breakfast in your room. Hanaya scores 4.8 for dinner on one major site (62 reviews) and 4.93 for food on another; its seasonal kaiseki changes every three months, with a choice of a 'gyū-zanmai' beef menu — Shiraoi beef seared sushi, sukiyaki and hot-plate beef — sea-bream boat platters, or split plans for a meat-lover and a seafood-lover, and draft beer, highballs and sake in the lobby are free throughout the stay. Critics mention a crowded table and portions on the small side, and meals are at low tables on floor cushions. Kiyomizuya began as a kappo restaurant and scores 4.64 for dinner across 579 reviews on Rakuten Travel and 4.7 on Jalan: a 13-course kaiseki laid out in your room, a 'couple's set', open to any pair, in which three dishes differ so you can share, and dashi a 2023 blogger thought worthy of a stock specialist. Drinks are priced like a pub's (draft beer ¥660, August 2026), but a May 2026 group called both meals dismal.
Takinoya serves kaiseki in private dining rooms from a Japanese head chef working with a French chef — hirame and matsukawa flounder sashimi, then Tokachi beef or abalone shabu-shabu — with one server looking after you from dinner through breakfast, whom 2026 reviews keep praising; but one 2026 guest found the portions tiny, there are no free drinks (beer ¥935), and there is no dinner if you arrive after 19:00. Bourou Noguchi Noboribetsu's Japanese-French kaiseki, also in private dining rooms, scores 4.65 on Rakuten and ends with Yumepirika rice cooked in a kama pot, yet it divides opinion more than at most top inns: bloggers and reviewers in 2024–26 found the Western-style courses fussy or not worth the price. Its breakfast, built around a morning shabu-shabu of Hokkaido beef, scores 4.6 on Jalan. Ryotei Hanayura serves kaiseki in 18 private dining rooms, with a smaller-portion menu for lighter eaters; 2026 reviewers praised the dishes, but some felt rushed or found starters pre-set and drying. Takinoya Bekkan Tamanoyu serves a long dinner at shoji-screened tables in its Hatsune dining room — a tomato seafood hotpot, a choice of charcoal-grilled Noboribetsu pork, Rishiri hokke or chicken skewers, then soft-serve with nama chocolate — though 2026 guests reported thawed sashimi and dishes set out before they sat down.

Takinoya is the long-established choice: more than ninety years old by its own account, it greets you with valet parking, matcha and a sweet, has tatami corridors you walk barefoot, and brings four kinds of Jigokudani spring water under one roof. The catch is a building and in-room baths that look dated, with reviews mentioning lingering odours and worn fittings. Oyado Kiyomizuya began as a kappo restaurant and has been cooking for more than half a century by its own account; today it is a quiet inn of around 30 rooms that takes no day bathers and serves no buffet, and repeat guests mention being remembered — though 2025–2026 reviews describe peeling wallpaper, black mould and insects in its old building.
Bourou Noguchi Noboribetsu is the modern counterpoint: opened in 2006 as the flagship of the Noguchi Kanko group, with a design led by the Hokkaido-born sculptor Takenobu Igarashi, it has 40 'wa-modern' suites and works like a ryokan — yukata, kaiseki and an onsen bath in every room — with tatami only in its 100㎡ Japanese-Western suites. Noboribetsu Onsen Kashoutei Hanaya bills itself as the smallest inn in a town of big hotels — 21 rooms on four floors beside the Kusurisanbetsu river — and staff photograph birthday and 88th-birthday celebrations and frame the prints. Ryotei Hanayura is the smallest and most upmarket inn of Toho Resort, the company behind the big Hotel Mahoroba, and you enter it through the lobby of its sister Park Hotel Gatei. Takinoya Bekkan Tamanoyu is Takinoya's annex, which bloggers recommend as a taste of that house for far less: the same incense in the lobby, Takinoya rice crackers as the welcome sweet in 2022 and simmered tofu at breakfast.

Read the ConsensusBest for families and easy access
Takinoya Bekkan Tamanoyu is the easiest family base: it stands in the middle of the onsen street, three minutes' walk from the bus terminal, with free parking for about 20–24 cars. Most rooms are 10-tatami Japanese rooms sleeping up to five, and a 16-tatami two-room type for up to six, one of only three rooms with a bathroom, suits families who don't want to rely on the small shared baths (from about ¥44,000 for two with two meals on one booking site). Diaper buckets and a milk warmer are available, the family bath can be booked, and the ropeway to the bear park starts up the steep road beside the inn; an August 2026 family watched the Jigoku Matsuri festival from their room, though the noise went on late. Takinoya, also three minutes from the terminal, welcomes children, with child rates, a free stroller and children's yukata listed by one booking site, and some booking sites say it will collect you from the bus terminal on request.
Ryotei Hanayura has the Park Hotel-mae bus stop at its door and lends baby bath chairs, a Bumbo seat and nappy-changing mats; the group's Mahoroba-go bus from Sapporo TV Tower costs ¥1,000 each way, must be booked at least 7 days ahead and doesn't run if nine or fewer people book. Oyado Kiyomizuya welcomes children — one booking site lists children's yukata, baby food on request and a free stroller — and serves meals in a private dining room to parties of five or more; it is about ten minutes' walk from the bus terminal, and staff come out to help with luggage. Noboribetsu Onsen Kashoutei Hanaya runs a free shuttle from JR Noboribetsu Station (book by the day before), and its 45㎡ Matsu suite, with table seating, suited a 2026 family with parents who have trouble walking; but standard rooms have low tables, reviewers heard neighbours and children through thin walls, and it is too far to walk comfortably to Jigokudani. Bourou Noguchi Noboribetsu is adults-only — no guests aged 12 or under — so it is no choice for young children; it runs its own shuttle buses from Sapporo Station and New Chitose Airport, but there is no pickup from JR Noboribetsu Station.

Best value
Takinoya Bekkan Tamanoyu, the only value-tier inn of the six, starts at about ¥35,200 for two with two meals on one booking site, and most 2026 reviewers paid ¥17,000–21,000 per person; it rates 4.6 across 1,614 reviews on one major site (service 4.7) and 4.50 across 585 on another. The catch: small baths, only three rooms with a bathroom, twin rooms facing a wall, thin futons, and broken air conditioning in two August 2026 stays. Noboribetsu Onsen Kashoutei Hanaya starts at ¥24,500 per person with two meals, both served in your room, plus free lobby drinks throughout the stay and a free station shuttle; bathing tax of ¥300 per person is extra. Oyado Kiyomizuya runs about ¥38,000–66,000 for two with two meals, with rooms from about ¥19,000 per person, and its pub-priced drinks keep the bill down.
Among the premium inns, Ryotei Hanayura is the cheapest way to an onsen bath of your own, from about ¥74,000–89,000 for two with two meals (¥61,000–75,000 in a standard room, October 2026), with free beer in the room fridge. Bourou Noguchi Noboribetsu's Junior Suite, from ¥81,856 for two on Ikyu (October 2026), costs about the same as Takinoya's cheapest room yet comes with an onsen bath and free drinks in the lounge and the room fridge; Jalan reviewers in 2026 almost all paid over ¥30,000 per person. Takinoya starts at ¥81,400 for two with two meals in AY and AW rooms, whose baths are not onsen, and around ¥100,000 with an onsen room, and reviewers find the extras thin for the price: no free drinks and a pushy sale of paid coffee.

What's in the water
Takinoya offers the most variety: four spring types from Jigokudani, with salt and iron springs in the top-floor Kumoi-no-yu and radium and sulphur in the basement garden bath Chien-no-yu, plus free-flowing spring water in the D and DW rooms' open-air baths; its baths score 4.79 on one leading site. Noboribetsu Onsen Kashoutei Hanaya takes the No. 1 Otsu-sen spring from Jigokudani, an acidic sulphur–iron simple spring at pH 2.3 and 72.5°C, milky grey with sediment; the inn calls it 100% free-flowing, cooled without adding water, but a 2022 blogger was told it is watered down in summer. Oyado Kiyomizuya has a single spring type, milky-white sulphur water full of yu-no-hana flakes, which it describes as 100% free-flowing; only one side of its two baths has the open-air tub, and they swap in the evening, so plan to bathe before and after the switch.
Ryotei Hanayura's shared baths offer three springs — sulphur, simple sulphur and an iron-bearing salt spring it calls the 'fertility spring' — which the inn describes as free-flowing, partly diluted and heated; its room baths use free-flowing sulphur water that runs very hot, and guests can also use the baths at Park Hotel Gatei next door. Bourou Noguchi Noboribetsu's sulphur-containing sodium-calcium chloride spring (pH 5.3, 46.4°C at source, 607 L/min of natural flow) is the classic milky Noboribetsu water; the inn says every bath is free-flowing, but Jalan lists it as diluted, and one blogger found the in-room water paler than the outdoor bath. Takinoya Bekkan Tamanoyu's milky water comes from the town's No. 1 Otsu source, according to a blogger, and one booking site lists it as free-flowing with water added; its outdoor tubs can run lukewarm.

For an onsen bath whichever room you book and a quiet suite to do nothing in, Bourou Noguchi Noboribetsu — if you're travelling without children and don't mind a dinner that divides opinion. For a private bath at a lower premium price, one of Ryotei Hanayura's 27 open-air-bath rooms, accepting water that needs cooling and a dated building. For four spring types at a long-established upmarket inn, Takinoya, ideally in a D or DW room. For food served in your room, Hanaya, with its free drinks, or Kiyomizuya, with its 13 courses — accepting small baths and ageing buildings at both. And on a budget or with children, Takinoya Bekkan Tamanoyu, for a taste of Takinoya's style for far less. Whichever you pick, check the exact room: in Noboribetsu, an onsen bath of your own, a bathroom, a view and table seating often come only with certain rooms or plans.
