Best ryokan in Beppu: 4 inns compared on onsen, food and price
Four Beppu ryokan compared: free-flowing baths in every room, a milky sulphur spring, sea views, food, families and value — with the catch at each inn.
Updated Oct 31, 2026
Beppu, in Oita, is Japan's biggest hot-spring town, and our four reviewed inns show very different sides of it. Two are in the city centre: KAI Beppu, a 68-room inn designed by Kengo Kuma on the Beppu Bay seafront, about 10 minutes on foot from JR Beppu Station, and Beppu Onsen Hotel Shiragiku, a hotel-style ryokan of about 90 rooms in a 12-storey tower beside Beppu Park, a 7-minute walk from the station's west exit. The other two sit up in Beppu's steam quarters: Sanso Kannawaen, a 50-room hillside estate in Kannawa beside the Umi and Yama 'hells', about 20 minutes by taxi from the station or on the inn's free shuttle, and Okamotoya Ryokan, a 15-room wooden inn in the sulphur-steam hamlet of Myoban, a minute from the Myoban bus stop and about 30 minutes by bus from the station. Three are classic-tier inns and Kannawaen is premium; two-meal stays start at about ¥23,000 per person at Shiragiku, about ¥29,700 for a windowless room at Kannawaen and about ¥56,000 for two at KAI Beppu, and most 2026 reviewers paid over ¥30,000 per person at Okamotoya.
The first thing to know in Beppu is that all four inns describe their water as free-flowing, but in different ways. Okamotoya's own acidic sulphur spring is 100% free-flowing with no water or heating added; Kannawaen's two private wells give a sodium-calcium chloride-sulphate spring that is cooled without adding water and runs into every room's bath; Shiragiku's own sodium bicarbonate spring is free-flowing with water added to bring the temperature down; and KAI Beppu's salty spring with bicarbonate is free-flowing with water added. Tattoo rules differ too: Kannawaen bars people with tattoos from its large shared baths, Okamotoya, according to one booking site, accepts only a single small tattoo covered with a sticker, KAI Beppu's group policy lets staff refuse use of the large bath, and Shiragiku publishes no policy — so ask directly, or book a room with its own bath. Below, the four are sorted by what you're travelling for, each with its scores, prices and main catch, taken from our full report on each ryokan.
Best for a private onsen in your room
Sanso Kannawaen is the only one of the four where every room has its own free-flowing onsen bath, usable at any hour: hinoki indoor tubs in the main building, and indoor plus open-air tubs in the annex, the villas and most of the hilltop Sora rooms. The 66㎡ Sora rooms with an open-air bath look over the town's steam plumes to Beppu Bay, and a June 2023 blogger's open-air tub turned cobalt blue overnight — though the same blogger's indoor bath never turned blue, room tubs can run lukewarm because the inflow is turned down, and in December 2025 a guest couldn't get an open-air tub warm enough. The fit-out is plainer than the price suggests: a 2022 blogger found a Sora room 'not very luxurious', and since an August 2024 revamp, the official notice says, Sora guests check themselves in at a machine and carry their own bags.
Okamotoya Ryokan has three ground-floor rooms with a free-flowing in-room bath: the special room Bōkai (51㎡, bay view), which cost two people ¥71,060 with two meals after points in February 2025; Nogiku (48㎡), renovated in July 2025, whose milky bath clouded with yunohana when a June 2026 guest stirred it; and Botan (30㎡). Beppu Onsen Hotel Shiragiku's only rooms with their own spring bath are its five Kikumanyō spa suites (78–112㎡), with an indoor onsen bath or a hinoki half-open-air bath up a flight of stairs, and it has no private baths to book. KAI Beppu's Japanese rooms with an open-air bath, on the 8th to 10th floors, add a small terrace tub for watching the sunrise over the bay, at about ¥74,000–82,000 for two with meals — but the tub fits one adult, some 2026 guests found debris and cobwebs in it, and the cheapest standard rooms have a shower booth and no bathtub at all.

Best food
Beppu Onsen Hotel Shiragiku is the pick for food and free extras: it rates 4.6 across 1,486 reviews on one major site, with breakfast at 4.9 and dinner at 4.7. Dinner is a 'modern kaiseki' with French and Italian touches in the top-floor Garland 12 over the bay, creative kaiseki served course by course in your room, or Kikusaiko, eight private tatami rooms with tables (from ¥18,150 per person, closed Wednesdays), with Bungo beef, Seki horse mackerel and kabosu flounder. Breakfast is an 80-dish buffet with more than 15 pâtissier-made cakes, and on arrival the 12th-floor lounge pours free wine, sake and shōchū (last entry 17:00). The catch: summer 2026 guests waited up to 30 minutes for breakfast, an October 2025 guest got only two slices of Seki aji, and some find the menu changes little year to year.
Okamotoya Ryokan's Oita kaiseki scores 4.86 for food on one booking site: a jigoku-steamed sea-bream head, fresh sashimi, Oita beef, Himeshima prawns and Oita-grown rice at tables overlooking the Myoban Bridge, always ending with the inn's own rich jigoku-mushi pudding, and a breakfast of dango-jiru dumpling soup and homemade tofu; one 2026 guest found the first night's rice and soup a little cold and the tables close together. Sanso Kannawaen offers kaiseki at Restaurant Yui, with Ise-ebi, abalone and wagyu shabu-shabu, or teppanyaki at Kaede, and its three-drawer Japanese breakfast box gets the most praise — but 2026 dinners drew complaints of small portions, courses rushed through in under an hour and requests to make way for the next sitting. KAI Beppu's seafood kaiseki brings Seki-aji or Seki-saba and a hotpot of spiny lobster, fugu and clams, eaten in semi-private booths split by bamboo blinds; bloggers from 2023 to 2025 loved the presentation, but 2026 reviewers mention thin portions, tired sashimi and neighbours heard clearly.

Best for history and character
Okamotoya Ryokan has the longest history of the four: it was opened in 1875 by a family that had been sent to Myoban to oversee its sulphur and alum works, the third generation turned the area's yunohana crystals into a bath product in 1884, and the inn's shop has sold its famous jigoku-mushi pudding since 1988. Today it's a 15-room wooden house above the Myoban Bridge, in a Meiji-era building with creaking, steep stairs; a May 2024 blogger was given tickets at check-in for steamed eggs at the inn's shop and a visit to the yunohana huts. Sanso Kannawaen was once an old-fashioned inn known for its large Japanese garden; it closed for about four years and reopened in August 2016 almost entirely rebuilt, with a noh stage of Nara timber, lit up at night, a thatched teahouse and two ponds, and its shared baths keep Kannawa box steam baths — but a returning guest in 2026 said it now feels more like a large resort hotel than a quiet old ryokan.
KAI Beppu, opened in July 2021, is the design choice: Kengo Kuma built it as an onsen town under one roof, with stone lanes between black walls, a lantern-lit lobby with a 24-hour foot bath facing the bay and persimmon-red rooms that all face the sea. After dinner the lobby turns into a night market, and at 21:15 staff in happi coats drum on wooden bath buckets in the nightly 'onsen jug band'. Beppu Onsen Hotel Shiragiku began in 1957 as the Shiragiku-sō inn and grew into a 12-storey main building (1973) with east and west wings, banquet halls and a karaoke lounge; several 2025–2026 reviewers mention the ageing building, but its biggest bath sits under a camphor tree over 100 years old.

Best for families and easy access
Beppu Onsen Hotel Shiragiku is the easy family choice: a 7-minute walk from the station's west exit, 70 free parking spaces, luggage held before check-in and families common — 2025–2026 reviewers came with babies and primary-school children, and children got substitute dishes at dinner. Some adults found children noisy in the outdoor bath, and an October 2025 guest could hear the neighbours clearly. KAI Beppu is 10 minutes on foot from JR Beppu, the airport limousine bus (about 50 minutes) stops 3 minutes away, parking is free, and shops and a department store are a few minutes' walk; children up to six can share a bed and there are kids' menus. But getting around takes several lifts, a garden crossing and stairs down to dinner, and parents in 2026 found it poorly suited to small children, with dim lighting, no vending machine and a kids' meal served after the adults'.
Sanso Kannawaen runs a free shuttle from JR Beppu Station's east exit (14:30–17:30, back 9:00–11:00; book by the day before), and its 141㎡ Ginnan room, with a kitchen and a kids' room, sleeps eight — a family who has come every year for five years used it in August 2026. But every child is charged, babies included, the access road is steep, guests call the complex a maze, and Sora rooms aren't wheelchair accessible. Okamotoya Ryokan doesn't accept children below primary-school age or, generally, groups of seven or more; its Meiji-era building has many high, steep stairs, including down to the open-air bath, and the inn asks older guests to bathe with a companion. Parking is limited to eight cars and must be booked, and the nearest shop is about 20 minutes on foot.

Best value
Beppu Onsen Hotel Shiragiku gives the most for the money: two-meal stays usually run about ¥23,000–30,000+ per person, and the free welcome lounge, ice lollies and coffee after the bath and a limited homemade pudding at night are included even on the popular breakfast-only plans. Most recent evidence comes from booking-site reviews rather than blogs — 4.6 across 1,486 reviews on one major site and 4.54 across 1,467 on another. The catch: an ageing building with busy shared baths, poor views from third-floor twins, one couple who felt ¥70,000 for two wasn't worth it, and an August 2026 notice that malware had leaked guests' names, addresses, phone numbers and emails for reservations made up to 8 April 2026 (no card details), so be wary of messages asking for card numbers.
Sanso Kannawaen starts at about ¥29,700 per person with two meals for the windowless room 501 and ¥41,250 for a standard Sora twin on one booking site, for an onsen bath in every room; it rates 4.6 across 759 reviews on one major site (rooms and baths 4.7), 4.51 across 767 on another and 4.33 across 108 on a third. Okamotoya Ryokan's room-only stays start around ¥41,800 for two, and most 2026 reviewers paid over ¥30,000 per person with two meals; it rates 4.74 across 43 reviews on one booking site, 4.59 across 501 on another and 4.4 across 563 on a third, where rooms score lowest at 4.0. KAI Beppu costs about ¥56,000–80,000 for two with meals, more with a private bath, and rates 4.3 across 601 reviews on one major site, where rooms and cleanliness score 4.6 and the bath, at 4.1, is its weakest point.

What's in the water
Okamotoya Ryokan's own self-flowing acidic sulphur spring — an acidic sulphur-bearing simple spring of the hydrogen sulphide type — is, the official site states, 100% free-flowing with no water or heating added, and it turns from pale blue to milky white depending on light and season; baths score 4.91 on one booking site. Each side has indoor tubs and a garden open-air bath, the men's open-air bath is the larger, bloggers found the changing rooms spotless and often had the baths to themselves, and the inn takes no day visitors, though a 2025 visitor found the water whiter and less blue than expected. Sanso Kannawaen's two private wells supply a sodium-calcium chloride-sulphate spring at 98.1°C at source, cooled to bathing temperature with no water added and free-flowing in every room bath and the shared baths, renovated in 2024, which add a large open-air bath facing Beppu Bay and a box steam bath where you sit with only your head out. On good days the water turns the cobalt blue of nearby Umi Jigoku, but the inn itself warns of colourless days, and a September 2026 guest found the big bath milky white.
Beppu Onsen Hotel Shiragiku's own sodium bicarbonate spring comes out at 50°C, about 60 litres a minute, and is free-flowing with water added to cool it; guests describe it as slightly silky. Its two bath houses swap daily: Kusu-yudono covers 265 tatami, with a hinoki indoor bath and a huge outdoor bath under the camphor tree, and Kiku-yudono has a blue-green cave bath with bubbles and a rock bath used as a natural steam bath. Guests love the size but call the layout maze-like, and mention leaves in the outdoor bath and tiny red worms in a washing area (September 2026). KAI Beppu's salty spring with bicarbonate is colourless and mild, free-flowing with water added; a September 2026 guest found the hottest bath topped out at 39°C, the rock open-air bath is small and enclosed 'like a greenhouse', and a March 2026 guest found it cold and unusable one morning, with no notice posted.

How to choose
For an onsen bath of your own and views over the Kannawa steam to the bay, Sanso Kannawaen — accepting a big, busy complex, a steep access road and uneven dinners. For water with nothing added and Oita cooking in a 150-year-old wooden inn, Okamotoya Ryokan, if steep stairs, no young children and only three rooms with their own bath suit you. For food, free extras and an easy walk from the station, Beppu Onsen Hotel Shiragiku, despite an ageing tower and busy shared baths. For sea views, design and a lively evening in the lobby, KAI Beppu — not the pick for a quiet stay or a big shared bath. Whichever you pick, check the exact room and plan: in Beppu, an in-room bath, a bay view or a hot-spring tub can depend on the floor or wing, and the blue water at Kannawaen and Okamotoya is never guaranteed.
