Taking sake and Japanese whisky home: airline limits, duty-free rules and how to pack bottles
Want to bring Japanese sake, shochu, umeshu or whisky home? Where to buy (brewery shops, ryokan tastings, online orders to your inn), Japan's drinking age, airline limits by alcohol strength, the tax-free change on 1 November 2026, duty-free allowances back home, why posting bottles rarely works, and how to pack them.
อัปเดตเมื่อ 21 ต.ค. 2026
A bottle of sake from the town where you soaked, a shochu you tried by the inn's hearth, a plum liqueur or a Japanese whisky: alcohol is one of the most natural things to take home from an onsen trip. It is also the souvenir with the most rules attached. Japan sets the age for buying, airlines and Japan's transport ministry set limits by alcohol strength, the tax-free system changed on 1 November 2026, your home country decides how much comes in duty-free, and the post office turns most bottles away.
This guide walks through each step, from tasting at your ryokan to packing the suitcase, using the official pages listed in the sources. If you'd rather have bottles or packing materials waiting at your inn, see our guide to delivery to your ryokan for how hotel and konbini deliveries work. Rules and allowances change, so check the linked page before you rely on a number — and enjoy the tasting in moderation.
Buying at the brewery: maps, shops and a liquor-tax exemption

First, the age rule. In Japan you must be 20 to drink or buy alcohol. Japan's National Tax Agency (NTA) points out that the civil age of adulthood fell to 18 in April 2022 but the age limit for alcohol stayed at 20. Sellers may not knowingly sell to anyone under 20 and are expected to check the age of customers who may be younger, so carry your passport when you go shopping for bottles.
Many onsen areas have breweries within reach. The NTA publishes regional sake brewery maps for every part of Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, each with an English version — a quick way to see what's near your inn before you go.
Some brewery shops can sell to visitors without liquor tax as well as consumption tax. Under the NTA's export liquor shop system, a brewer whose shop holds the permit can sell its own drinks to foreign visitors and other non-residents exempt from both taxes, provided customs confirms the bottles leave Japan. As of 1 April 2026 only 131 shops nationwide held the permit — Hiroshima Prefecture had the most, with 16 — so ask at the counter rather than assume. On 1 November 2026 this exemption moved to the same refund method as ordinary tax-free shopping, explained further down.
Buying at the brewery also lets you choose bottle sizes to suit your luggage. If you're travelling between several inns, small bottles or a tasting set are easier to carry than a 1.8-litre bottle.

Taste first at your ryokan

A ryokan dinner or lounge is a good place to find out what you like before you buy a full bottle. At KAI Tamatsukuri in Shimane, rooms have a guide to Shimane breweries, and the inn's sake bar (18:30–21:30) pours three Shimane sakes with a snack for ¥1,200. At Takahan in Echigo-Yuzawa, guests rave about the free sake from Niigata breweries in the lounge and at meals. In Ibusuki, Hakusuikan has a free shochu tasting room by its Genroku bath, open 16:30–19:00, and nearby Shusuien began in 1963 when a shochu-brewing family turned their villa into an inn.
Other inns pour regional drinks with dinner: Hana no Yado Matsuya in Kinugawa serves local sake from Tochigi breweries, and in 2026 Midoriya in Kawayu Onsen included local sake and umeshu, the Japanese plum liqueur, free with dinner. In Kusatsu, Hotel Sakurai was opened in 1964 by the family behind the Asama Shuzō sake brewery in nearby Naganohara.
Note the name on the label and ask the front desk where to buy it — none of our reports confirm which inn shops sell bottles to take away. And a small bottle can come to you unasked: Kokarian in Yuwaku Onsen gives a 180 ml bottle of the inn's sake (or a piece of Kutani ware) for filling in the room questionnaire. At 180 ml it's too big for the cabin on an international flight, so it goes in your checked bag.
Pace the tasting: free-flowing drinks and hot baths make a long evening, and the bottles will still be there in the morning.

อ่านข้อสรุปรีวิวOrdering bottles online to your hotel or ryokan
If you missed a brewery, or want a regional sake you tasted at dinner, Amazon.co.jp and Rakuten Ichiba both sell alcohol; Rakuten has its own Japanese sake and shochu (日本酒・焼酎) category. Expect to confirm your age: the NTA asks shops selling alcohol by mail order or online to make sure buyers state their age and that it is checked.
Ask the inn before you order. Yamato Transport says it delivers to a hotel or ryokan if the inn is willing to accept the parcel, that some inns restrict where and when you can collect it, and that delivery times can't be specified. When you send a parcel to an inn yourself, Yamato asks you to ship it at least two days before check-in, or three for longer distances, and a parcel to a guest can't be cash on delivery.
Konbini pickup has limits that bottles can hit. Rakuten's convenience-store pickup excludes parcels over 100 cm (length, width and height combined) or 10 kg, chilled or frozen goods and cash on delivery, and holds parcels for only two or three days depending on the chain and carrier — a case of large bottles may simply not qualify.
Order with the flight in mind: whatever arrives still has to fit the airline limits and your home country's allowance below, so a few small bottles usually make more sense than a case.

Flying home: 100 ml in the cabin, limits by strength in the hold

On international flights from Japan, liquids in your cabin bag must be in containers of 100 ml or less, packed in one resealable, transparent plastic bag of up to 1 litre per passenger, according to Japan's transport ministry (MLIT). A larger container isn't accepted even if it's only part-full, and the rule applies to transfer passengers too. In practice, a bottle of sake or whisky belongs in your checked bag.
MLIT's list of restricted items sets limits by alcohol strength. Drinks of 24% alcohol by volume or less are treated as non-dangerous goods with no quantity limit. Drinks above 24% and up to 70% are limited to 5 litres per person. Anything over 70% can't be carried at all, in the cabin or the hold. In both permitted bands the drink must be in its retail container: decanting into a hip flask isn't allowed. So check the strength printed on each label before you pack.
Duty-free shops after security are the exception for the cabin: MLIT exempts liquids bought there from the 100 ml rule, but warns they may be confiscated if you change planes in another country under that country's rules.
Flying within Japan between inns? MLIT's list allows retail bottles in carry-on as well as checked baggage within the same strength limits; the 100 ml rule is the extra restriction for international flights. MLIT notes that airlines may set stricter rules, so check yours.

Packing bottles so they arrive in one piece
Kansai Airport says liquids may go in checked baggage but that some fragile items may not be accepted in some cases, and that rules vary between airlines — so check your airline's baggage page if you're carrying several bottles.
Keep each bottle in its original retail packaging (MLIT requires a retail container for alcohol) and add protection around it: an inflatable or padded bottle protector, or bubble wrap. Seal each bottle in a plastic bag in case of leaks, place bottles in the middle of the suitcase surrounded by soft clothing rather than against the shell, and keep them away from the wheels and corners.
Bottles are heavy. A luggage scale helps you stay within your airline's weight allowance, and a suitcase strap keeps a full case closed. If you've bought more than you can pack, see our guide to delivery to your ryokan for sending luggage ahead within Japan.

Tax-free from 1 November 2026, and duty-free at home

Japan switched to a refund system for tax-free shopping on 1 November 2026, the Japan Tourism Agency says. You pay the tax-inclusive price at a tax-free shop (¥5,000 or more, excluding tax, per store per day) and the tax is refunded after a customs check when you leave. Within 90 days of purchase, present your passport at a tax-free terminal in the international departure lobby before you check in your bags, with all the goods from each receipt in your possession; checked luggage can't be retrieved for the procedure, and if even one item from a receipt is missing, nothing on that receipt qualifies.
That matters for bottles in two ways. A drink you open in Japan — at your ryokan, say — is no longer eligible: report it to a customs officer instead of using the terminal. And the order at the airport is fixed: terminal first, then check the suitcase with the bottles. The brewery liquor-tax exemption above moved to the same refund method on the same date, according to the NTA.
Your home country then decides how much comes in duty-free. Two examples: arriving in Great Britain, GOV.UK allows 4 litres of spirits and other alcoholic products over 22%, or 9 litres of alcoholic products up to 22% (not counting beer, cider or wine) — you can split those two, for instance half of each — plus 18 litres of wine and 42 litres of beer and cider. Go over an allowance and you pay tax and duty on everything in that category; there's no allowance at all under 17. For the United States, CBP says returning residents aged 21 or over can include one litre of alcohol in their duty-free exemption; more is dutiable, and the law of the state you arrive in may limit the amount.
Check the ABV on each bottle against your own country's categories, and look up your government's customs page before you buy.
Posting bottles home: usually not an option
Don't plan on mailing bottles home. Japan Post lists alcoholic beverages over 24% alcohol among the items that can't be sent by international mail to any destination, so check the label: anything stronger than that can't be posted at all. Below that strength, the receiving country decides: liquor is the first example on Japan Post's list of prohibited items people often try to send to destinations that ban them, and Japan Post's country-by-country conditions (in Japanese only) say what each destination accepts.
Japan Post adds that parcels are X-rayed after acceptance and that a parcel containing a non-mailable item may be returned before it leaves Japan. Anything you bought tax-free also has to travel with you: the refund rules cover only goods you carry out of Japan yourself.
If you can't carry everything, buy less, choose smaller bottles, or pick something you can buy again at home — and keep the bottles that matter most in your own suitcase.
