Japanese Guest Consensus

Takayama's crowd-pleaser: a wood-built, tatami-floored inn with its own silky spring piped into most rooms' open-air baths, one attendant from arrival to farewell and Hida-beef kaiseki in private dining rooms — though the water is recirculated and heated, and the cheapest rooms have no onsen at all

Hidatei Hanaougi is a 45-room inn on the western edge of Takayama, built around rare jindai keyaki — zelkova the inn says lay buried for millennia after an eruption of Mount Chōkai — with every corridor laid in tatami, so you walk without slippers from the lobby on. Its draw is a private well, drilled 1,200m down: a sodium bicarbonate spring that bloggers and reviewers describe as slippery, 'toro-toro' water — 'extremely slippery-smooth', one 4travel writer said after a December 2022 stay. Ten of its twelve room types have an open-air bath filled with that spring. The other hook is service: one attendant looks after you from arrival to the wave goodbye, and dinner and breakfast are served in private dining rooms. Scores are among the highest in the region: 4.9 across 1,996 reviews on Jalan (service 5.0), 4.87 across 659 on Rakuten (baths 4.96) and 4.70 across 171 on Ikyu. Bloggers in 2022–2023 praised the Hida-beef shabu-shabu and steak, the hōba-miso breakfast and the late-night Takayama ramen. Know before you book: the inn's own FAQ says the baths are recirculated, filtered and heated, and the hinoki indoor bath in every room is not onsen. Complaints from 2026 include dinners rushed through in 75 minutes, food that didn't justify the top room rates, a drain smell near the lobby, unfriendly front-desk staff, and ceiling noise until about 3am in a ground-floor room. For a Thursday in November 2026, two people paid from ¥70,400 with two meals in a room without an onsen bath, and roughly ¥156,000–174,000 in a renovated garden room.

Room Selection Guide

Recommended

  • Shakkyō (石橋) and Hijiri (聖) — 40㎡ twins with a garden and their own onsen open-air bath

Renovated Shakkyō, which adds a shower booth, is the room that appears most often in Ikyu's summer 2026 reviews, praised for its design, usability and bath. Hijiri has a private garden and a roofed open-air bath on a wooden deck. A September 2026 couple paid a little over ¥90,000 for Hijiri. One ground-floor Hijiri guest in August 2026 heard thumping from the ceiling until nearly 3am, so ask for an upper floor or a room away from the kitchen.

  • Nishiki (錦) and Takumi (匠) three-room suites, or Hana (華), for families

Nishiki and Takumi are 75㎡ with 12.5-, 7.5- and 8-mat rooms, two beds plus futons and an onsen open-air bath, for up to seven people. A September 2026 family in Nishiki praised the garden and the in-room bath. Hana (40㎡) has a veranda onsen bath in stone, ceramic or hinoki, but you can't choose which, and a family of four found it a little tight in August 2026. Top of the range, Kinkō and Hōju add a shower booth and a garden, and Hōmei adds a dining room for in-room meals.

Request To Avoid

  • Ichii (櫟) and Nagomi (和) — the rooms without an onsen bath

These are the cheapest types: Ichii is the standard 40㎡ 12-mat room and Nagomi a 75㎡ three-room suite. Both have only a hinoki unit bath, which the inn confirms is not onsen, so you'll use the shared baths. In the open-air room baths, there's nowhere to wash except in the shower-booth types. One September 2026 guest also had to undress inside the room because there's no changing area. A 2023 blogger found the heated floor too hot under futons at night, and noted that sound carries through the shoji at room entrances.

Dining Deep Dive

Breakfast Consensus

4.5/5

A Japanese set breakfast built around hōba miso grilled on a magnolia leaf (with Hida beef in one blogger's 2023 meal), Hida Koshihikari rice with free refills, served in your private dining room from 7:30–8:30. Widely praised — a 2023 travelogue called it 'as lavish as dinner'

Book the free shuttle from JR Takayama Station's west exit (Hakusan exit; every 30 minutes, 14:30–17:30) by the day before. Morning runs return to the station and the Miyagawa morning market. Book the private open-air bath at the front desk on the day (¥3,300 for 50 minutes; soaking only, no shower). The sauna closes at 21:00, earlier than the main baths. Takayama ramen is served for a fee from 21:00 to 23:30.

Dinner Insights

4.3/5

A Kyoto-style seasonal kaiseki built around Hida beef — steak or shabu-shabu as the main, often with roast Hida beef, local river fish such as salt-grilled iwana or ayu, and seafood from Toyama Bay — served in a private dining room, starting between 17:30 and 19:00. A December 2022 blogger made the Hida-beef shabu-shabu the highlight, and many 2026 reviewers loved the food. Others found the Hida beef oily or less tender than expected, the courses rushed (75 minutes from first dish to rice), and the cooking essentially the same whatever the room price. A Hida-beef-heavy plan and à-la-carte extras are available, and vegetarian or gluten-free menus cost ¥3,000 extra with three days' notice.

Onsen & Wellness Realities

Water Type

The inn's own spring, Jindai no Yu, drilled 1,200m down: a sodium bicarbonate spring (isotonic, neutral, low-temperature) with a slippery, lotion-like feel. The inn's FAQ says it fills the shared baths, private bath and in-room open-air baths, and that the water is recirculated, filtered and heated — not free-flowing. Jalan lists it as having water added and heated. The hinoki indoor baths in every room are not onsen.

Privacy & Atmosphere

Ten of twelve room types have an onsen open-air bath, usable at any hour. The shared baths each have an indoor bath, a rock open-air bath facing a Japanese garden and a sauna; one 2026 guest also mentions a lie-down bath. The men's and women's sides swap between evening (15:00–24:00) and morning (5:00–9:30). Some 2026 reviewers rarely met anyone in them. There is one paid private open-air bath, plus a free foot bath that looks onto the courtyard and koi pond.

Tattoo Policy

No policy found on the official site or Japanese booking sites — contact the inn. Most room types have their own open-air onsen bath.

Local Warnings & Nuances

  1. 01

Check-in 15:00, check-out 11:00; late check-out costs ¥3,300 an hour if requested by the day before. The doors close at midnight.

  2. 02

Not to be confused with its sister inn Hanaougi Bettei Iiyama, diagonally across the road (3 minutes' walk), or with Gōra Hanaougi in Hakone.

  3. 03

Not barrier-free: there are no accessible rooms and a big step at each room entrance. Wheelchairs can't reach the baths, toilets, rooms or dining rooms, though there's a lift and a slope at the entrance.

  4. 04

Children are welcome: primary-school children pay 70% and preschoolers 50%; children aged 2–5 sharing bedding pay a ¥3,300 facility fee, and under-2s stay free. No pets.

  5. 05

Drivers need winter tyres or chains from late November to mid-April. Parking is free (about 40 spaces). Takayama has a taxi shortage, so taxis may be slow at weekends and in peak season.
