Kotohira's original onsen inn, founded in 1725 and steps from the Konpira approach: cheap, generous kaiseki and a rooftop bath with views — but an ageing building, repeated cleanliness complaints and a rooftop bath that women can use only in the evening
Yachiyo traces itself to 1725, when it opened as Shiragaya; the inn says its spring was struck in 1976 and that until 1998 'Konpira Onsen' meant Yachiyo alone. Today it is a 39-room, mostly tatami ryokan in a Showa-era block on the main street a minute or two from the shrine steps. Five independent blogs from 2022–2024 describe what you get: big, plain Japanese rooms (a cheap 4.5-tatami booking upgraded to 8 tatami in 2023), a two-meal stay for two at ¥26,400 in May 2024, kaiseki with sashimi, beef, kamameshi and Sanuki udon that every blogger found filling, a hot indoor bath and a rooftop open-air bath — rebuilt in spring 2022 with a lie-down tub and a round sitting tub, and since 2026 two barrel saunas. The verdict on recent stays rests mainly on booking-site reviews, and they are weak: 2.8 across 74 Jalan reviews (cleanliness 2.4, bath 2.7, breakfast 3.6) and 3.17 across 766 on Rakuten (location 3.42, facilities 2.85). The location, the price, the breakfast and kind front-desk staff win praise; the complaints in 2025–2026 are consistent — rubbish, hair and bird droppings in the baths, a musty smell, broken taps and lights, thin walls, and a rooftop bath guests say can be seen from neighbouring buildings. Jalan lists the bath water as diluted, heated and recirculated. Treat it as a cheap, convenient Konpira base with old-fashioned charm, not a polished onsen stay.
Room Selection Guide
What the guests who stayed here actually recommendRecommended
Premium Japanese-Western room, 70㎡, with private hinoki bath and dining room
The newest room type: tatami plus twin beds, a view bath with a cypress tub and a separate dining room where meals are served on room-dining plans. An April 2026 Jalan reviewer (4/5) found it spacious and clean, liked eating at a table and noted the room never felt dry — though the back of the wall TV was thick with dust and a remote had dead batteries. Jalan prices it at over ¥30,000 per person with two meals.
Designer rooms with a semi-open-air bath, Kemari (stone) and Ogatama (hinoki)
Two non-smoking architect-designed rooms with a private view bath that the inn describes as free-flowing. A December 2025 guest found the room bath relaxing but got no explanation of the room or bath and noticed wiring marks on the walls; an October 2026 Rakuten guest found the room onsen spacious but the fridge iced up and the futon thin. An April 2026 guest (2/5) found dusty corridors and a burnt-out kettle despite the renovation. Over ¥30,000 per person on Jalan.
Request To Avoid
Older standard rooms and the 4.5- and 6-tatami rooms (toilet only, no bath)
The smallest rooms have a toilet but no bath, so you rely on the shared baths. In the older rooms 2025–2026 reviewers report a mould smell on arrival (July 2026), noise from above and beside the room and a cramped entrance (August 2026), walls so thin they heard neighbours at night (May 2026), a dirty balcony (October 2026) and dim lighting throughout (September 2026). Bathrooms in the standard rooms are small unit baths.

Dining Deep Dive
Breakfast Consensus
3.6/5A Japanese set breakfast in the second-floor dining hall — the inn's best-rated element (3.6 on Jalan). A 2023 blogger praised plump dried horse mackerel and an iron pan that cooks tofu and a fried egg side by side; a May 2024 blogger listed simmered tofu, eggs, mirin-dried fish and hijiki, and only missed after-meal coffee. A Rakuten regular says they keep coming back for the breakfast.
Room-only stays are cheap (¥6,600 per person via Rakuten in April 2022; ¥7,000–19,000 per person on Jalan in 2026), and a December 2025 guest added breakfast by asking at check-in. The inn kept luggage and cars while guests climbed Konpira-san (2026 reviews), and one guest was told the car could stay until noon after check-out. Nearby restaurants keep irregular hours, so check before booking room-only.
Dinner Insights
3.3/5Kaiseki served in a dining hall on most plans: the 'Umaimon Zanmai' menu lists soy-bean shoyu-mame, seasonal sashimi, local beef with Konpira garlic miso, grilled prawn, seasonal kamameshi and Sanuki udon. Bloggers found it generous — a May 2024 couple got udon-suki and kamameshi and turned the leftover rice into onigiri; a 2024 family of three (¥56,000 with two meals) liked the sashimi and called the meat 'decent'. Weak points: young servers who ignored three requests for water and couldn't replace missing slippers (2024 blog), staff clearing and setting tables noisily mid-meal (November 2025), Sanuki udon served too firm (September 2026) and a family who found everything underwhelming (August 2026).
Onsen & Wellness Realities
Konpira Onsen, listed by the inn as a sodium-chloride cold mineral spring (another line of the official site calls it bicarbonate-earth). Jalan's listing states the baths are diluted, heated and recirculated with filtration, and a 2023 blogger read chlorine disinfection on the posted analysis. The inn describes only the two designer rooms' private baths as free-flowing.
Separate men's and women's indoor baths on the sixth floor (renovated 2022; 6:00–10:00 and 15:00–23:00) and a rooftop open-air bath with two tubs and two barrel saunas that alternates: men 15:00–18:30 and 6:00–10:00, women 19:00–23:00 only (bathing wear is provided for women). One designer private bath, Fukufune, is ¥2,200 for 40 minutes (15:00–22:40, reserve ahead). Bloggers enjoyed the rooftop alone at dawn and the hot indoor water but found the indoor bath small; a 2024 blogger called the rooftop tub shallow and lukewarm. 2025–2026 reviews repeatedly say the rooftop can be seen from nearby buildings, and report hair, rubbish and pigeon droppings, broken lights and taps.

Local Warnings & Nuances
- 01
Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:00. Station pick-up is by the town's Mobi shared taxi, not an inn car — phone on arrival; unavailable when festivals close the roads.
- 02
Women can use the rooftop open-air bath only from 19:00 to 23:00; men get the afternoon and the morning. Day visitors (¥1,000, 11:00–14:30) also use it, on alternate days by gender.
- 03
The building is old and dim, and cleanliness is the most common complaint (Jalan cleanliness 2.4 in 2025–2026). The inn replies to most complaints, but they keep recurring.
- 04
Free parking in three lots a short way off; the one-way streets mean a loop round, so drop bags at the front door first and staff will park or direct you.
- 05
Rates swing widely: a cash-only breakfast plan cost ¥7,990 for one in 2023, while two-meal plans in 2026 ran about ¥14,000–28,000 per person and over ¥30,000 in rooms with private baths.
