Best ryokan in Kawaguchiko: 5 inns compared on Fuji views, food and price
Five Lake Kawaguchi ryokan compared: Mt Fuji views from the room, private onsen baths, food, families and value — with the catch at each inn.
Updated Oct 31, 2026
At Lake Kawaguchi, in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi, where you stay decides how much of Mt Fuji you see. Our five reviewed inns sit on opposite shores: Shuhokaku Kogetsu on the quiet north shore and Kozantei Ubuya on the Ubuyagasaki headland both look south across the water to Fuji, each about 10 minutes from Kawaguchiko Station by free shuttle; FUFU Kawaguchiko is on a steep slope above the lake facing Fuji, about 15 minutes by taxi with no shuttle; and Fuji-Kawaguchiko Onsen Konanso and Kasuitei Ooya stand on the lakeside road on the town side of the south shore, about 10 minutes' walk (or a free shuttle) from the station, where most rooms look north across the lake, away from Fuji. FUFU and Ubuya are premium inns priced for two, and Kogetsu, Konanso and Kasuitei Ooya are classic-tier; two-meal prices run from about ¥19,800 per person at Kasuitei Ooya to about ¥300,000 for two in FUFU's top suite.
The first question here is the view. Every room faces Fuji at Kogetsu and Ubuya, every suite at FUFU (though the view varies room by room), ten of Konanso's 50 rooms, and at Kasuitei Ooya only the Fuji-side rooms in the newer wing, over the rooftops. And Fuji is never guaranteed: it often hides in summer, and the clearest views come in the colder months. The water comes second: none of the five says its baths are free-flowing, the springs at Kogetsu and Konanso are cool enough that they must be heated, and at Ubuya and Kasuitei Ooya the open-air baths in the rooms aren't onsen at all. Only Ubuya publishes a tattoo policy — tattoos must be covered by two 10 cm × 10 cm stickers — so ask the others directly. Below, the five are sorted by what you're travelling for, each with its scores, prices and main catch, taken from our full report on each ryokan.
Best for Mt Fuji views
Shuhokaku Kogetsu is laid out so that every room and both shared open-air baths look straight across the water to Mt Fuji, and location scores 4.86 across 607 reviews on one major site. Get up at dawn: the foot-bath terrace's shallow water basin mirrors Fuji even when the lake isn't calm, and guests in 2025–2026 describe watching sunrise on Fuji from the balcony foot baths of the second-floor rooms. Kozantei Ubuya is built square-on to Fuji, so every room, the baths, the lounge and the glass-walled dining hall look across the lake to the mountain; location scores 4.70 on one major site, and a July 2026 blogger saw the 'upside-down Fuji' on the lake only before the boats started. Even Ubuya's cheapest rooms face Fuji over the lake.
FUFU Kawaguchiko turns all 32 suites and every seat in its Yamanoha restaurant towards Fuji, but the view varies by room at the same price: a September 2025 guest in the top-floor Kozue suite got only a 'half Fuji', and an August 2026 guest on the third floor found the bath faced other hotel buildings — ask for an unobstructed view when booking. At Fuji-Kawaguchiko Onsen Konanso only the ten Fuji-side rooms face the mountain; the other 40 look north across the lake, but Fuji is in view from the free rooftop foot bath (clearest at dawn), the shared baths and the three paid private baths. Kasuitei Ooya is the weakest for Fuji: the mountain is behind the building, lake-side rooms look across the water to the Misaka mountains, Fuji-side rooms in the newer wing see it over the rooftops in clear weather — a September 2025 guest who asked when booking got one — and inner rooms have no view at all. Wherever you stay, Fuji often hides in summer: many summer 2026 guests at Kogetsu never saw it, and an August 2022 guest at Ubuya saw nothing on either day and was told November to February is best.

Best for a private onsen in your room
FUFU Kawaguchiko is the surest way to have your own onsen with Fuji in front of it: every suite, from 59㎡ to 135㎡, has an open-air bath lined with Fuji lava and filled from the inn's own spring, plus a fireplace, and the luxury suites add a lava bedrock sauna; rooms score 4.68 on one leading site. The inn doesn't say whether the baths are free-flowing; guests describe them as recirculated and set around 42.5°C, and 2026 gripes include baths too hot and water that cooled on the second day and could only be adjusted by staff. Fuji-Kawaguchiko Onsen Konanso's ten Fuji-side rooms each have an open-air bath filled with spring water (about ¥46,200–60,500 per person with two meals on one site) — reviewers in November 2025 and May 2026 called soaking with Fuji in view the highlight of the stay — though a December 2025 guest found one smelled strongly of chlorine; its modern Rin and Kohaku rooms add a semi-open-air onsen bath facing the lake.
Shuhokaku Kogetsu's four second-floor open-air-bath rooms and every third-floor room, renovated in March 2023, have onsen open-air baths facing Fuji across the lake, and its second-floor foot-bath rooms have an onsen foot bath on the balcony; standard rooms have only a shower. At Kozantei Ubuya and Kasuitei Ooya, the in-room open-air baths aren't onsen: Ubuya's use ordinary water (only the shared 'Fuji no Yu' baths are hot-spring water), and Kasuitei Ooya's hinoki and Shigaraki tubs use heated 'Mt Fuji water', deliberately, so that guests who avoid spring water can use them — several guests found the shower pressure weak. Private baths cost ¥3,300 for 50 minutes at Kogetsu (two open-air baths), Konanso (three, with Fuji views) and Kasuitei Ooya (the rooftop 'Ukifune', with a lake view).

Best food
Kasuitei Ooya is the food inn: dinner scores 4.6 and service 4.7 on one major site, where it rates 4.5 across 1,329 reviews, and almost every review mentions the size. Seasonal kaiseki comes to your room for parties of two to four — the inn's own hōtō noodle hotpot in house miso, tuna, amberjack and botan-shrimp sashimi, snow crab, beef stew and rice cooked with ancient grains grown at Kawaguchiko — and breakfast brings miso soup ladled hot once you sit down and an egg you fry yourself. Critics: a September 2026 guest found dinner disappointing at ¥35,000 a head, a January 2026 family got cold miso soup and long waits between courses, and the inn's FAQ says it can't handle allergies for children's meals.
Fuji-Kawaguchiko Onsen Konanso also serves seasonal kaiseki in your room (groups of up to four), with 2026 reviewers singling out the rice cooked in its own pot and the crab miso soup; its Japanese-led breakfast buffet, with hōtō noodles and French toast, is its most consistently praised meal, though a September 2026 critic found dinner 'not very memorable'. Shuhokaku Kogetsu's in-room kaiseki — Oshino salmon among the sashimi and Koshu wine-pork shabu-shabu in October 2026, plus a late-night chimaki — is so plentiful many guests couldn't finish, but its breakfast buffet is its lowest sub-score (4.2), and from 19 April 2027 most rooms will dine in a renovated dining hall. FUFU Kawaguchiko cooks over firewood, flame and lava stone at Yamanoha, with no in-room dining; guests praise the flambé and the natto gratin at breakfast, but 2025–2026 dinners ran two and a half to three hours. Kozantei Ubuya has dropped kaiseki for a seasonal buffet or A5 Kuroge wagyu shabu-shabu; bloggers loved the shabu-shabu, while a May 2026 family found the buffet's crab thawed and salty.

Kozantei Ubuya is built around 'celebrating life': happi coats, a self-service photo studio, Fuji-shaped cakes (order at least 3 days ahead) and staff who join in birthdays and anniversaries. Children are welcome from birth — under-3s free, ages 3–6 at 50%, primary-school children at 70% — with nappy bins and toys on request, and a June 2023 family with a crawling baby had beds pushed together on a wide tatami floor; the free lounge serves drinks and sweets made on the spot. Kasuitei Ooya is just as good with babies, setting out baby soap, wipes, nappy bins and baby chairs; standard rooms sleep up to five and the 20-tatami rooms suit three generations — a September 2026 party of nine gathered in one — primary-school children pay 70%, and a March 2025 couple used an open-air-bath room for a proposal, with staff helping with surprises.
Shuhokaku Kogetsu welcomes children (primary-school 70%, ages 3–6 50% with a children's meal, under-3s free), and its Special Room slept a family of five in August 2022, though it isn't sold on booking sites. Fuji-Kawaguchiko Onsen Konanso gives gifts for celebrations, but it has no accessible rooms, and the rooftop foot bath and terrace rooms are reached by stairs. FUFU Kawaguchiko welcomes children with cots, baby baths and kids' meals, but its long dinners and taxi-only access make it more of a couples' inn. For easy access, Kogetsu, Ubuya, Konanso and Kasuitei Ooya all run free shuttles from Kawaguchiko Station — Konanso and Kasuitei Ooya are also about 10 minutes' walk away — while FUFU, at the top of a steep slope, needs a taxi (about ¥2,600).

Best value
Kasuitei Ooya is the cheapest of the five, at about ¥19,800–44,600 per person with two meals, and for that you get a generous kaiseki, often in your room, and a rating of 4.5 across 1,329 reviews on one major site. The catch: no Fuji view from most rooms, in-room open-air baths that aren't onsen, and an old building — few, slow lifts, dust, thin walls and Wi-Fi that keeps dropping. Shuhokaku Kogetsu, at about ¥28,600–42,300 per person, is the cheaper way to have Fuji from every room, with free beer, highballs and Yamanashi wine on the foot-bath terrace until 18:30, and it rates 4.7 across 686 reviews on one major site — but its standard rooms have no tub.
Fuji-Kawaguchiko Onsen Konanso runs about ¥30,800–60,500 per person and is the most-reviewed of the five, at 4.8 across 2,686 reviews on one major site; its cheapest Tamayura lake-side rooms (from ¥30,800 on one site) have no Fuji view and no onsen in the room. The two premium inns are priced for two: Kozantei Ubuya about ¥72,600–127,600 with two meals, and FUFU Kawaguchiko from about ¥128,700–139,700 up to about ¥300,000 for the top suite. Kogetsu warns that some overseas booking sites it hasn't authorised have shown wrong rooms or prices more than double the real rate, so check against the official site.

What's in the water
Shuhokaku Kogetsu says all its room open-air baths, foot baths and shared baths use Kawaguchiko Onsen water — a calcium-sodium sulphate spring at about 31°C and pH 9.1, according to the analysis posted in a room bath in 2022 — but a major booking site lists the baths as recirculated and filtered, a blogger confirms they aren't free-flowing, and with a source that cool, the water is heated. Fuji-Kawaguchiko Onsen Konanso pumps a calcium-sodium sulphate-chloride spring (pH 7.2) from the town's No. 2 and No. 3 wells; it comes out at 27.3°C, so it has to be heated, and guests call it clean but plain. The inn doesn't say whether it is recirculated or chlorinated, though a December 2025 guest found a room's open-air bath smelled strongly of chlorine, and the indoor tubs in the rooms aren't onsen.
FUFU Kawaguchiko has its own spring, Nishikawa Onsen 'Reihō-no-yu', a weakly alkaline sodium-calcium sulphate spring; the inn doesn't say whether the baths are free-flowing, and guests report the room baths are kept hot by recirculation and cooled with tap water. Kozantei Ubuya's Fujikawaguchiko Onsen water, a calcium-sodium chloride-sulphate spring classed as high-temperature, fills only the shared Fuji-view baths, and the official site doesn't say whether it's free-flowing or recirculated. Kasuitei Ooya's Fujikawaguchiko Onsen water, a calcium-sodium sulphate-chloride spring, fills two sets of shared baths — on the top floor facing the lake, and in the basement with a sauna and an outdoor bath among rocks by a small waterfall; a booking site lists it as heated, the inn doesn't say whether it's free-flowing, and baths score only 4.11 on one major site.

How to choose
For Fuji from every room at a classic-inn price, Shuhokaku Kogetsu — book an onsen-bath room if you want a soak of your own, and stay before 19 April 2027 if you want dinner in your room. For a private onsen with Fuji in front of it, FUFU Kawaguchiko, if a long dinner and a view that varies room by room won't bother you. For families and celebrations with Fuji from every window, Kozantei Ubuya, accepting buffet or shabu-shabu dinners and room baths that aren't onsen. For in-room kaiseki and the best-loved breakfast, Konanso — in a Fuji-side room if the view matters; and for big dinners at the lowest price, Kasuitei Ooya, knowing Fuji is behind the building. Whichever you pick, check the exact room: at Lake Kawaguchi, a Fuji view and an onsen bath of your own often come only with certain rooms, and no inn can promise the mountain will show.

Kawaguchi, Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi — on the quiet north shore of Lake Kawaguchi, facing Mt Fuji across the water, about 10 minutes by free shuttle from Kawaguchiko Station (the lakeside sightseeing bus stops at the Kubota Itchiku Art Museum, by the inn)

Shuhokaku Kogetsu
秀峰閣 湖月
A 43-room lakeside inn where every room faces Mt Fuji across Lake Kawaguchi, with kaiseki served in your room and free drinks on a foot-bath terrace — but the baths are recirculated, standard rooms have only a shower, and dinner moves to a dining hall from April 2027

FUFU Kawaguchiko
ふふ 河口湖
Thirty-two Mt Fuji-facing suites, each with a lava-stone open-air bath and fireplace, and two MICHELIN Keys — but the Fuji view varies by room, the in-room baths don't appear to be free-flowing, and 2025–2026 guests complain of three-hour dinners and uneven service

Fuji-Kawaguchiko Onsen Konanso
富士河口湖温泉郷 湖南荘
A big, polished lakeside inn that still serves kaiseki dinner in your room, with Mt Fuji from the rooftop foot bath — but it stands on the town shore, so 40 of its 50 rooms face the lake rather than Fuji, and the heated spring water has little character

花水庭おおや
A century-old, family-friendly lakeside inn with generous kaiseki dinners (often served in your room) and rooftop baths over Lake Kawaguchi — but Mt Fuji is behind the building, the in-room open-air baths aren't onsen, and the building shows its age
